Has anyone heard about Facebook charging from July? is it a hoax?

Asked by scotsbloke (3756points) January 14th, 2010

I’m sure it’s a hoax, as this rumour seems to pop up every year….......isn’t there a saying though, no smoke without fire?
Where does the rumour come from?
What would be the point of this rumour?

But if they did charge – what do you think would be a fair amount?
I use mine rarely and would just close it down – not even a nominal fee of a pounds a month would make me want to pay for it. I’d move on to a free site, always.
What about you though?

Is facebook worth paying for in your opinion? Why? / Why not?
Do you NEED facebook?

Is it over-rated?

I need it…want it…love it. But I WILL NOT pay for it.

scotsbloke's avatar

@jbfletcherfan but why not? if you need it want it and stuff.

I dunno…It just goes against the grain for me to pay for something like that. They get plenty of advertisement & publicity. Surely they don’t need the members to pay for it! I hope this is all BS.

You may wanna check out the snopes article on this. It clearly debunks it.

No.
These rumors, as you mention, are constantly popping up.
They’ve done so for every single free site. I’ve seen it on twitter, and myspace, and yahoo, and gmail, and hotmail, blah blah blah blah.
And it has never happened.

Just wait until someone official from Facebook says it, then worry about it.

Facebook have repeatedly said they will not charge users for the basic service.

The rumours seems to come from a number of unscrupulous people who start groups on topics that people care about (something along the lines of “Keep Facebook Free”) and then when they have loads of members they start to spam them.

They make WAY too much money from advertising and a free service. If they made people pay, they’d lose more advertising money than they could possibly make by making people pay.

Its a HOAX. The gullible are pulled in by it and join those “the sky is falling” groups and volubly protest something that is NEVER going to happen.

Ok, Fair points and thanks (specially for the snopes thing – I’d totally forgotten about snopes!)
the second part of my question though:
If they did?
Would you pay?
Is the site worth it for you?

Sarcasm's avatar

I wouldn’t pay for Facebook. There are plenty of other social networking sites out there that’re free that I can migrate to. Facebook doesn’t do anything special, it was just in the right place at the right time, so it caught on.

Nope, not to pay.

dunno if it is a hoax
but
if it isn’t, I will be cancelling my account as soon as they request some cash
there are plenty of other places that are free to hang out online.

I don’t use facebook. But I would probably pay 5 bucks a year for a “Pro” Fluther account. That is assuming there was a free version and the pro one had some extra features.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Saturated_Brain Good on you for looking it up. I’m glad this wasn’t true. I’d think not. They’d lose sooooooooooo many members. They’d be in the hole instead of making money.

@jbfletcherfan Every time I see that someone has joined one of those hair-on-fire groups, I tell them that its absurd. Even just thinking critically would show most people that its not ever going to happen.

I wish they would introduce a pay model and get people off their damn site. Why is it all my friends insist on communicating through FB? I hate it.
