What's the best treatment for a scar.

Asked by Grisson (4634points) January 14th, 2010

The Friday before Christmas I managed to put a major gash in my forehead requiring 10 stitches. I tell everyone that I got in a bar fight with Voldemort, but the truth is I tripped over a trailer hitch and became ‘one’ with the concrete.

So now I have this nifty scar. Unfortunately it’s not quite lightning-bolt shaped. It’s more of a > sign… or < sign from my point of view. Or as SmashMouth says “In the shape of an ‘L’ on [his] forehead”.

So my dermatologist says the redness will go down on its own, and the best thing to do is put suncreen on it so it won’t darken. My question is: What’s your remedy for scars (with or without sunscreen)?

Sunscreen is definitely a good idea. The best thing for scars is massage. It breaks up the hard tissues. Try doing it with vitamin E, coconut oil, jojoba oil, etc.

I’ve had luck with Vitamin E also.

I have used bio-oil, and it is superb. If you go to

www.bio-oil.com

it will tell you all about its uses. Good luck

In my semi-extensive scar research, I’ve found that the type of oil (given it’s not synthetic) does not matter when it comes to scar reduction. It’s all about the massage. I’m normally against accusations about marketing ploys, but I truly think these magical oils that reduce scars are a marketing ploy. The silicone patches work though.

Try some specific product for that purpose,or you can also try vitamin-C serum,vitamin-E serum, skin growth booster,or else. Sunscreen only protect you when you’re outside, you must also try other product to reverse/cure your skin. (consider to consume more Vitamin A,C,and E) It’ll help.

Strivectin was made to reduce stretch marks. They found it worked very well on scars and also crowsfeet! I can attest that it is very good for sunburn.

@faye Does Strivectin have sunscreen in it?

No, you would massage it in at night or if you are going to be in. I think you could massage it in continually, while watching a movie for eg, for a few minutes. You want to be gentle on healing tissue- I wonder when you should start massage. You don’t want to damage growing skin.

a few leaches should do the trick.

I use Palmers Coco Butter- not the lotion, but the condensed kind in a jar. Also leave the scar alone and don’t pick at it v

Lurve for the explanation!

Time. You can try various tings, but that’s the only thing that works.

Try “invicible scars”. All its ingredients help scars heal and improve the appearance of the final scar. It’s got vitamin C, silicone, and a bunch of natural ingredients that improve scar healing. More info here : http://www.inviciblescars.com
Definitely also do the scar massage and sunscreen. Exposing the scar to a lot of sunlight while it’s healing will make it permanently more red or dark.
