I know cottage cheese expires... but how to tell?

I know cottage cheese goes bad. And I know with certain foods it says it will expire by a certain time but that’s without taking the whole opening it and using it into effect. I’ve had this cottage cheese for a while, and well, I’ve always thought it smells bad… it always has a bit of a bitter/sour taste and it looks gross. I can’t tell by those factors if it’s expired. Any ideas as to cottage cheese’s shelf life?

Goes sour just like milk.
Great in coffee.
Yeah, look for the expiration date on the container, that’s always a good start!
That said, in my experience, it’s probably good for a week or so after that. If in doubt taste it, and if it’s truly yucky, spit it out. It won’t kill you.
@trumi I’ve never heard of doing that… sounds a bit odd, but maybe worth a try?
@nope I couldn’t find the expiration date on the container. Kind of strange. So I figured I’d ask on here. Otherwise I wouldn’t have asked, hahah.
If it’s not white or at least white-ish it’s probably not good (fuzzy, white or otherwise of course is bad). If you think it smells bad it’s probably not good unless you think it smells bad when you buy it… in which case if it smells noticeably worse it’s not good.
It’s been a little while since I had any that went bad but iirc it can naturally separate a little too (I might just be thinking of yoghurt). That slightly discolored liquid can be poured off, the rest if a nice healthy white should still be fine.
I can usually tell when it hits the trash can. :-)
It will smell sour or “off” and taste the same way. I’ve discovered that if I store it upside down in its container, it doesn’t spoil as quickly.
If you’re not sure it’s still good, dump it. Nobody ever got ptomain doing that.
It begins to separate, you’ll see a yellowish liquid !! the texture will also change !!
Cottage cheese turns yellow and smells when it is old. If it is more than a couple of days past the expiration, and even if it still looks okay, I would throw it out. Dairy is very nice when fresh.
Ok, I don’t see anything here to tell you what to do with cottage cheese AFTER it goes sour. Dosen’t anyone here know that the only thing that sours is the whey? all you have to do is wash it. The curds are curds, they can’t get any more curdy, lol…wash it, add a touch of milk
, or just add chopped green pepper, celery, and tomato and stuff a tomato with it! It’s delish, and will save you money!
