The iPhone has a GPS app built in and the directions are turn by turn.
Unless your question is referring to VERBAL turn by turn which you didn’t specify.
Well, that’s precisely what the built in GPS on the iPhone does. Your car is represented by a little blue moving dot on the map and each turn gives you very precise measurements to the next turn.
Try it out. The interface is remarkably intuitive. I no longer bother with getting AAA routing maps since the iPhone is so much easier to use.
@Buttonstc
I have an iPhone, and that is what I use. It doesnt automatically go to the next turn once you pass the current one.
Well, of course it doesn’t. After all, its not a mind reader :)
You just tap the little arrow on upper right to advance to each successive one. I don’t find that an insurmountable difficulty, personally speaking :)
My main problem is having to have my reading glasses on while driving. But that’s also true of paper maps as well.
If you can read an iPhone screen without glasses, you’re gold :D
@Buttonstc It doesn’t take mind reading to know if you’ve passed the turn. It just takes GPS.
Have you really never had a GPS system like Garmin? iPhone Maps app is nowhere near its functionality.
You can buy real turn by turn GPS apps in the App Store now. You should look into them.
No, I haven’t used a Garmin or any other type of GPS.
As a matter of fact, the GPS feature of the iPhone was one of the biggest reasons for why I chose the iPhone rather than a Palm device.
Are the fuller function apps which you referenced available for a regular iPhone or must it be jalbroken?
I’m reluctant to do that as it will void my warranty. I may after this year is up, but I haven’t yet found a compelling enough reason to risk it.
@Buttonstc They are available for a regular iPhone, no jailbreaking required. Just look in the GPS section. I think they are pretty expensive though.
@jackm yea they are pretty expensive plus i believe they require a 10 dollar monthly service charge. and yes i have that repository installed. but when i search for xgps i dont get the app. i tried downloading it with rock instead of cydia. i was succesful but its not voiced turn by turn.
@Buttonstc yes i meant VOICE turn by turn. the MAP “gps” feature that comes with the iphone initially requires me to constantly grab my phone and search where i am, also to drag the map with my finger in order to follow where im going. not to safe while on the highway.
