Nurses and doctors have been encouraged to contact the Red Cross or National Nurse Org or tweet #HaitiRN”. The Red Cross is coordinating an effort to get doctors and nurses to Haiti ASAP. You can call The National Nurse Organization at 1–800-578–8225 http://www.nationalnursesunited.org/

That’s as far as I know.

You could check out this site, or you could talk to this site to see what they know of. In addition, you can register here to see if any organizations are interested in your assistance.

i hope that Haiti doesn’t become a political arena for varying competitive organisations and countries, I’d like to see an apolitical commitment toward full cooperation in a purely transcendental humanitarian spirit. If you manage to volunteer perhaps you could keep us posted as to your experiences, it would be great to have someone from this site actually hands on. What is distressing so far is the lack of heavy machinery, picking it’s way through the concrete structures, this is so frustrating, no contingency plans, i mean it’s not like Haiti isn’t subjected to Hurricane damage on an almost yearly basis. Very disappointing. This crisis has the potential to end up as a too much, too late scenario. The opportunity for rapid response has been missed sadly.

At the moment, all air traffic has stopped in and out of Haiti because there is no place to park planes, and no jet fuel to enable take-offs. I would imagine that accessibility through the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico by air, and then by boat is how disaster relief is getting in. The Dominican Republic appears to have suffered little to no effects from the earthquake.

Getting there will be tough right now but you could offer your time and effort right now organizing local food, water, shoes, clothes, school supplies, bedding/blanket and money drives. There are a lot of homeless people down there now who will need these items. Religious organizations, Salvation Army and American Haitian organizations would welcome this kind of local support efforts to help bolster their efforts down there.

Habitat for Humanity is forming groups to go down in a while after things have settled. If you have a religious preference I would check with the national headquarters and see if they are forming a group.
