Who would be the best organization to donate money too for the people of Haiti?

Asked by BoBo1946 (15325points) January 15th, 2010

There are so many horror stories about organizations that use the money for self serving purposes.

Watching the news clips, those people really need our help.

What organization would you donate money too?

Any of these would be a good choice-

You can always check on a (non-religious) charity at CharityNavigator.org to see how much of your money goes to overhead and how much gets on the ground to help people.

I’ve chosen Madre for myself. http://www.madre.org/index.php?s=3&b=10

@gemiwing thank you..have you used these before?

@BoBo1946—These as in the websites or these as in all of the charities? I have used the websites before. I have not used all of the charities listed on the interaction.org site.

This is another credible resource:

I would suggest the International Red Cross and Red Crescent.

@BoBo1946 , I donated to the IFRC when the Indian Ocean Tsumani hit. There is no guarantee that any donations you send them will be earmarked for Haiti, but they will use the money where it is needed most. They already have people on the ground in Haiti, and their reputation is above reproach.

You can’t go wrong with the Red Cross. They’re running commercials on TV to send donations to.

I’d definitely go with the Red Cross as @jbfletcherfan said.

There’s a link to donate on the front page of MySpace too. Just happened to notice it.

I no longer trust the Red Cross with my money. Not making a judgment call on anyone else at all, I’m just no longer comfortable giving them money. Blood yes, money no. After the debacle with them in Katrina and 9/11 it makes me nervous.

@gemiwing yeah, they blew there…I was down there just a few days after the storm hit and stayed there two months working. Did not see them.

I agree with @gemiwing, the Red Cross’s operational costs take up far more of their donations than they should, not to mention their lack of correct action in certain cases.

I think I’d go with Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres, not only because they’re going in and just doing the job as medical facilities in Haiti have been destroyed and they need help, but also because they are a great organization in general.

Apparently not Yele Haiti.

I for one have no problem giving to the Red Cross. They help where they can, and what I give my not end up in Haiti, but at least it won’t go to waste.

avvooooooo's avatar

@Snarp The Red Cross uses far more money supporting itself than it does anyone who needs it.

90% of donations to the Red Cross go to program expenses, 5.9% to administrative expenses, and 3.9% to fundraising expenses. Sounds good to me. Yes their program is varied, but I don’t have a problem with any of it.
