Do you feel like it is more accepted for a man to have a bad singing voice than a woman?

I was listening to my iPod today and started thinking about how many male artist don’t have the best singing voice, but is still praised and loved for his music. Artists off the top of my head would be Bob Dylan, Jeff Mangum, Conor Oberst ect. Now I love each of these musicians, but there voices usually are categorized as shaky, and overall not the best voices out there, but people love them including me. Then I tried to think of a female artist that would fall into this same category and I could not think of one. Do you think that it is just more accepted for men to have bad singing voices than women? or am I just overlooking the female singers like this. Why do you think this is?

no, i think if a woman is good looking she can overcome this…such as madonna, britney spears, fergie, and peaches to name a few so as long as a woman is marginally talented if she has any looks whatsoever she get a pass….
Autotune hides so
many bum notes.
I remember when male singers like Crosby, Sinatra and Torme, and females like Rosemary Clooney (George’s aunt), Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee—and these are only 6 names out of hundreds and hundreds—didn’t need autotune even if had been invented. They had great voices.
I seem to recall Cindy Crawford’s attempt at singing in a commercial was not particularly euphonious. ;) I don’t think this hurt her career as a supermodel very much. :D
I think more of a case can be built, as @evil2 might be alluding to, that a woman who isn’t “conventionally attractive” would seem to have to be a really, really good singer to become a success. (And what about instrumental skills vs. singing?)
@evil2 and @hiphiphopflipflapflop I get what you saying, but I am talking about Brittany Spears, and that dumb girl off of The Hills trying to sing. I am talking about what I call “real” music, not this overly edited pop music. I guess another way to put it would be raw music. All of the females I can think of in this group have naturally great voices. I’m not saying these men have horrible voices, or music, but they would not be generally considered amazing singing voices. Does that make any sense?
most definitely… men can get away with doing quite a lot more things badly…more than women… but singing is most categorically one of the most prolific ones!! it’s all so prejudice
I’m a male and I sing. But what I lack in talent I make up in volume.
I’m just relieved that someone else doesn’t like Bob Dylan’s singing voice. I say that around here and get a look like I’m the second coming of the devil.
I’m a woman and I sing a lot out loud and in public and my voice stinks and everyone loves me anyway.
But maybe that’s not why.
i think historically men are forgiven the voice due to ‘integrity man’ whereas women tend to have been regarded as tender flowers, if the voice isn’t dainty… it doesnt cut it.
there are plenty of exceptions to this rule. I’d say the (Very Amazing) Aretha Franklin reaches to and above her range in many of her recordings, it doesn’t stop her being regarded, rightly as a top soul voice.
There are also a plethora of male pop acts who have used auto tune and lots of deception to sound pretty and perfect.
In the end i’d pick a voice that sounds “right” for its track.
@susanc i bet its part of why they like you, anyone with the guts to belt it out…good or not, is usually a very good friend to have around.
When it comes to someone attempting to sing karoke, it does not make any difference. i have placed cotton in my ears when most men and women attempt to sing. how anyone can embarrass themselves this way is beyond me.
Despite gains made towards equality for women, the tolerance for women being less than perfect is far less than for men because men still set more of the standards of acceptance.
The hidden discrimination will take much more time to eradicate.
No, I think women can sing badly and it really doesn’t matter much. Much more women sing along to songs and they don’t seem to care how they sound. Men don’t really get into singing along to music, in my opinion. More lead singers are guys, and I think the average Joe might be shy or intimidated to belt out a tune with the radio. Women sing all the time.
