Do you talk to yourself?

Asked by Zen_Again (9936points) January 16th, 2010

I do sometimes.

I literally say what I would’ve said to the other person in a “missed” opportunity, or even work things out by role-playing scenarios. I find it helps, like dreams.

Do you ever talk to yourself?

When I’m driving sometimes I do.
I try to figure out problems I’m having, or I plan out what I’m going to say to people.
Just to see how it sounds.

All the time but I have yet to answer back.

I live alone, of course I talk to myself. I also talk to my dog, my tv, my computer. But yes, if I need to talk to someone and have an agenda, I usually write it out and practice it outloud.

Sarcasm's avatar

No! who said that?

I don’t necessarily talk to myself, I just think out loud.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

Absolutely, and I really don’t feel that weird about it. It helps me commit things to memory when I say them aloud to myself.

Michael_Huntington's avatar

sometimes, I’d just say random KITH quotes
Weiner flavor!

El_Cadejo's avatar

I work things out aloud. Like “hmmm ok ill go here do this, this, and that…wait no that wont work ok do this , this and then that other thing.” Mayhaps im crazy, but it helps me organize my thoughts.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

I sing vaudeville tunes to myself.I also throw tomatoes… at myself.;)

Jharty89's avatar

I do every so often. Especially if I’m stressed or worried, then i talk to myself to make me feel better and calm down.

DominicX's avatar

Sometimes. Like @Sarcasm, I “think out loud” sometimes. Not too often, though. It can be useful, especially when there’s a lot to think about. My mom pretty much only talks to herself when she’s cooking, I’ve noticed.

All the time.

E.g. You idiot! You’ve locked your keys in the ____ again!

Hello self. Your hair looks horrid. Do you really care? Thought not.

Geez, I can’t believe she’s wearing that nasty perfume! Doesn’t she know that it kills my nose cells?

Wow. This manuscript was great at 2:00 am, but now it’s lame. It’s one those days again, isn’t it?

SABOTEUR's avatar

Unconsciously, yes.

Whenever I observe myself doing so, I attempt practicing “simply observing” the thoughts; refraining from actively participating with of feeding thought new energy.

This quiets the mind and allows us to experience more of the present and less of our projections.

“Talking to oneself” can be quite entertaining…as long as you remember it’s entertainment and frequently practice controlling thought so that thought doesn’t control you.

ultimateego's avatar

yes. i do. all.the.time.

Dr_Lawrence's avatar

I talk to myself many times a day. It is helpful for me in organizing my thoughts and activities.

shadling21's avatar

I try not to do it too much in public, but in private, I become quite chatty. I also have pretend conversations with people. It feels so good to put those thoughts and emotions into words.

Shield_of_Achilles's avatar

I talk to myself a lot.

It’s when I stop and realize that I’m envisioning 2 people in the room that I feel I’m crazy…...

The_Inquisitor's avatar

I talk to myself all the time. Especially when I’m doing homework, and trying to understand something.

I talk to myself when I think nobody is around, or that nobody can hear me, just thinking out loud.

Zen_Again's avatar

I am normal. Yay!

knitfroggy's avatar

I talk to myself a lot but probably think aloud more often.

rooeytoo's avatar

I don’t bother talking to myself because I usually ignore me, but I do talk to my dogs, they are always intrigued and impressed by what I say. And attentive to.

Sarcasm's avatar

That’s not fair, @rooeytoo, you bribe them with treats.

rooeytoo's avatar

@Sarcasm – hehehe, that’s true and it’s not nice of you to reveal my secret to the entire fluther!

ratboy's avatar

I’m not currently on speaking terms with me.

disturbed_broken's avatar

I swear at myself haha and if I’m attempting to write poetry I read it to myself..
Or I think out loud.

arnbev959's avatar

I don’t talk to myself when other people are around. My housemates do that, and it gets very annoying.

When I’m alone though, yes, I do talk to myself. There are some things that I can only do when I’m alone, like cleaning, because I find it very difficult to do without talking to myself.

rooeytoo's avatar

Ratboy strikes again, heheheh! ga

@Zen_Again said, “I am normal. Yay!”

Now let’s not go leaping to conclusions!

Of course you are as normal as the rest of us! Oh Oh!

bean's avatar

yes… i talk to myself sometimes… and sometimes i answer my self later on when i resolve what i was thinking about…

Sophief's avatar

Yes I do, and I answer myself. I even pretend there is a lot of people with me and I talk to them all and have different relationships with them.

ccrow's avatar

See, that’s the nice thing about having dogs, because you can actually be talking to yourself without seeming quite so crazy… I do talk to myself, & have conversations w/others from time to time, w/out the other person being present.

Scooby's avatar

Yeah sure do don’t I!! yes you do!! See! I told ya so!! All the time it’s what keeps me sane Lol…. You can say that again. :-/ who said that??

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@rooeytoo I talk to my dogs too that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it!

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

Only when I’m in the middle of something that is causing me physical difficulties – I say to myself ‘look it, you’re a human, our bodies are resilient, hundreds of years have passed and human bodies everywhere have been through what you’ve been through – you can make it’

ETpro's avatar

Ha! I’ve just finished telling myself, “You idiot, You should have searched to see if somebody else had already asked, ‘Do you talk to yourself?’ before wasting time writing up the question details.”
