Have you ever been in a situation where you were in imminent threat of death?
In the past, I was a civil servant and was in more than one situation where I was in fear of imminent death. I served High Risk Drug Warrants and was often the first to enter a situation, not knowing the outcome. Situations that I mentally and physically prepared for, but the reality was very different. Have you ever been in a similar situation, in whatever capacity? and was it the same as you imagined? How did you respond/react physically, mentally, and emotionally? Did it have long lasting impact to your psyche? Your beliefs about people in general?

Being a police officer for 44 years, need i say more?
Several times in Desert Storm and Afghanistan. It comes with the job of being a professional soldier.
I went skiing once, and a little girl was skiing in the same direction I was. I either had the choice of hitting her full on, or going off a steep ledge in the direction of a highway. I chose the steep ledge to save the girl, and ended up braking both legs. Luckily, I landed in a snow pile several feet short of the highway. Not sure if it counts as “threat of death”, but it sure felt like it at the time.
I’ve been in a couple of serious car accidents. They happened so fast there wasn’t much time to process. The second one made me very nervous about driving for several years although I did do it.
Yes. I used to work with tigers.
When I worked at a convenience store during my college years, I was held up by two young teenagers with guns. I just froze, and they took money from the register and left. I suppose if I had challenged them in any way I could have been shot.
Several times, yes. Most of them were in the military. They changed me by making me think about what was truly important in my life… what did I want to accomplish, who did I want to be?
There was a gang fight involving about 40 Nortenios in front of my house. They started trying to tear apart my picket fence, which I had just built, using the pickets as weapons.
I went out to the gate, and tryed to loom large over the fence, so that no one would do that. While I am standing there, gunshots went off to my right, and then to my left.
I turned around, laughing, and said to my friend (who was at my doorstep) “I’m standing in the middle of a gunfight!” My friend was frantically waving me back into the house.
That was certainly not the reaction I thought I would have to being in that situation.
Towards the end of every pregnancy, although I only knew during the third one. I was quite nervous and stressed once I knew, but I was unwilling to terminate my planned pregnancy. Working with my doctors, we prepared as best we could for emergency delivery plans and alternatives; closely monitored my health and the baby’s health. Made plans with my husband for contingencies in the event of my death. Obviously, I survived… and so did all three of my children. :) Going forward, my husband (now ex) got a vasectomy so we wouldn’t face that particular risk again.
Also, when I was 15, I went through thyroid storm which can kill you. Again, I didn’t know that at the time. Even if I had, I’m not sure how much I’d have been able to comprehend. I was pretty whacked out at the time!
When I was 5 years old I was in my grandmother house, I was in a bed room suposeablyy taking a nap. I noticed a faucet sticking out of the wall. I thought it was odd to have one on the inside of the house, so I turned it on to see if any water would come out., none did, I lost intrst and climed back in bed. stgarted to geel sleepy. Just befor I passed out my older sister(10) came in and tuned the faucet off, oprned the windows, snd removed me frm the room. seems the faucet was a gass line for an old type heater.
I had a burst appendix, and the doctor botched the operation, so I nearly died.
