Charlton Heston, but I believe he is dead now. I know he portrayed Moses, but I think he would be a good God portrayal.

Tempted to say Russell Crowe. So far up his own arse he thinks he is god! Of the guys i’ve seen play god, well a god any way, i’d have to say Laurence Olivier in Clash of the Titans. Fabulously camp, unintentionally of course.

morgan freeman is god

Flo_Nightengale's avatar

@filmfann I like the idea of MORGAN FREEMAN too!

Jude's avatar

Oh, God (George Burns) ;-)

I think Steve Buscemi would be a hoot, but if you’re going for serious, Morgan Freeman or James Earl Jones have the necessary gravitas.

@ucme Lawrence Olivier played Zeus not God

Dame Judi Dench.
Harrison Ford.
BIlly Connolly.
Joe Pesci

All would make good Movie gods

Who ever does the voice of him on Family guy. Hands down! ;)

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities you beat me. I was going to say the same!

Adolf Hitler. He would not even have to act.

Richard Wilson in his Victor Meldrew days. Would be appropriate because like him, “I don’t believe it.”

I dunno where all of these write-in answers are coming from.
I preferred Alanis Morissette in Dogma. She was a fun God.

Supacase's avatar

@JONESGH I thought he was awesome too until that bit about him dating his granddaughter came to light. Eww.

I still have to say he was the best god, though. At least the best one I can think of right now. I thought of him before I opened the question and read the details of the question.

@mammal Zeus is a god, just not the Christian god.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

Jeffrey Tambor also made a pretty good God in Arrested Development.

SuperMouse's avatar

George Burns hands down.

mammal's avatar

@Supacase Zeus is an anthropomorphic deity amongst a pantheon of divinely endowed beings, God is depicted very differently.

ucme's avatar

@mammal Either way the two are intertwined in their mythology.

Supacase's avatar

@mammal “deity” means “god.” He was considered a god to the ancient Greeks. Yes, there were several gods; It is called polytheism. As for being anthropomorphic, the Christian god fits that description as well.

ucme's avatar

I did clearly state that he played “a god.“Good god, something so simple morphs into complication.

Rude_Bear's avatar

Alanis Morissette in Dogma. I particularly liked when she, as God, attempted a hand stand and failed.

rangerr's avatar

Morgan Freeman.

oratio's avatar

I kind of liked Alanis Morisette playing god in Dogma. But Freeman is a cool god.

Bugabear's avatar

Another one for Morgan Freeman. His voice is perfect. Although Charlton Heston when he has a beard does look the part.

When folks ask about redundant answers and/or lurving one answer before another of the same, this question is illustrative. After reading the question, scroll down to the first “Morgan Freeman” answer, click “great”, move on.

artificialard's avatar

Morgan Freeman’s definitely the most qualified

James Mason played Mr. Jordon in Heaven Can Wait. Not God, but certainly at least a mid-level manager angel. He was kind of what I expect, though I love Alanis Morissette running up and hugging people in Dogma.

I’ve got two others – not strictly god per se, but the God/Man…y’all know who I’m talking about…

Luke Perry in John From Cincinnati. He was really, really good in that role.
And Peter Sellars in Being There. Simply marvelous.

Ed Asner and Ellen Burstyn.

lefteh's avatar

Ellen Degeneres is going to play God in the 2011 remake of Oh, God! I’m really looking forward to that. I think she’ll be the best God ever.

@frdelrosario I don’t see any such rule. I think jellies should answer as we see fit. You can always skip any answers you don’t want to read.

I agree with imah and supermouse.

mammal's avatar

@ucme, sure you did say a god, i miss read, your comment, but glossing over the differences between Zeus and God, simply wont do. They are as different as they are similar. But this is a debate for another thread and an interesting one.

ucme's avatar

@mammal No debate to be had, irrelevant nonsense.Rather, let’s put a nice gloss finish on it.

Rude_Bear's avatar

@lefteh :—That rumor has been floating around for years…..—

YARNLADY's avatar

@lefteh According to an article in FirstShowing.net, she is signed to play Mother Nature in a comedy, and also shows as a work in progress on her IMDB site.

mattbrowne's avatar

John de Lancie might come close except we he gets in trouble with the continuum.

smilingheart1's avatar

I am not citing any actual roles played, but I believe God has the kind heart of Jimmy Stewart and the kahunas of George Clooney where necesary.
