How to get my dog from eating her blanket?

Asked by keldog (4points) January 17th, 2010

I have a 8yr old terrier mix. She is crate trained and has exhibited mild chewing behaviors in the past (small carpet chunks, etc). She has not done this for almost two years but recently within the last couple of weeks, she has been chewing and eating chunks of the blanket that is in her crate. She has not been constipated and has passed them with her stool within a few days of eating them. I know she may have some seperation anxiety but how can I keep her from eating this while in her crate. She shares her crate with a 7 yr old chihuahua mix who likes to sleep underneath a blanket while in the crate, so it’s hard for me to take away all the bedding and punish one without affecting the other.

Thanks for any help/advice!

A wap on the nose and a “bag dog” normally works.

Put treats in a hiding ball or other toy where she has to work at it to get them out.

Make sure she is getting enough exercise.

Leave and go outside the window nearest the crate. If she cries, make a loud banging noise and say no.

Go out and leave her in the crate for a few minutes. Then come back. Don’t greet her or the other dog with excitement or high-pitched talking. just let them out matter of factly. Then repeat going out for longer intervals each time.

@Shield_of_Achilles A dog should never be “wapped on the nose”

@keldog Don’t take that advice!
Commit to spending more time w/ her outside of the crate. If you’re not walking her everyday, start now. It makes a world of difference. If she won’t stop chewing the blanket, seperate the two dogs into seperate crates. Good luck!

@BBSDTfamily And why not. I’m not saying smack him senseless. Kinda like smacking someone on the back of the head.

@Shield_of_Achilles Hitting your dog for something that happened a while ago does absolutely no good.

@Marina You have to show them. They arn’t dumb animals.

If a dog craps on the carpet when you’re away, and you show it to them, give them a little bit of a wap, say “bad dog”, they’ll realize that they didn’t please you.

Dogs want to please their masters. That’s why people used to call me a dog.

Could there be something physically wrong?

@Shield_of_Achilles Dogs live in the present. Showing them what they did does not work.

@Marina 5 dogs later, I beg to differ.

You’re going to have to move the chewer to her own empty crate. If they like to be together, leave the crates where they can see and smell each other.
