Do you believe dreams can change how you veiw the world?

Asked by bitter_sweet_rose (115points) January 17th, 2010

I know this sounds weird but hear me out. Last night I dreamed that my mom and dad had just got into a big fight so my mom was going for a ride in our Corvette, (which we actually own by the way.) My family loves to drive fast cars for the rush, so to speak. Anyway in the dream I went with her and we were going down the road all the sudden a little kid ran out in front of us so my mom swerved, trying not to hit him. We both fell forward form the impact (no set belts of course) I hit my head really hard on the dash bored and my phone fell out of my hands. Someone that saw called 911 to get us help. I was disoriented so I didn’t know what was happening. When the medics came I refused to go to the hospital until I knew if my mom was ok. But they made me go and has I struggled to get away I saw her on the ground motionless. (Just like her brother had died years before. which really happened) That’s when I woke up. So my question is has a dream ever changed how you viewed the world? From this dream I am going to spend more time with my family and savor every minute I have on Earth. Because when it’s gone you don’t get a second chance. Thanks.

I think it just reminded you of what you already knew.

I don’t think dreams change anything, people do. But they can be surprising reminders and occasionally moments of insight.

I don’t think that dreams change the world. Our dreams represent our subconscious.

Can dreams change how we view the world? Well, I think they can inspire us to change how we view it. They’re experiences of a sort and as such can change our perceptions and invoke new insights all of which can have an impact on what we see and how we interact the world around us.

Also, dreams can provide us insight into ourselves that we aren’t a consciously acknowledging. I’m a firm believer that the better we understand ourselves and our reactions and beliefs the better equipped we are to engage the world around us. So in that respect as well, I believe dreams can change our view of reality.

Doesn’t sound weird at all. I’ve had the same experience and believe that dreams can put one in touch with knowledge and feelings buried in the subconscious. These, in turn, can produce epiphanies that affect one’s views.

It think that dreams are made up from your brain for a reason. something happened, anxiety and it affected you through a dream. i think that the fact that this dream had so much impact on you, you must be very thankful for your family because this happened. I think it will make you keep them close to your heart, and it has made you think differently about them. So, yes I think that they can affect your views on life decisions what your dreams are about etc.

On multiple occasions I have dreamed about one of my brothers violently attacking myself and our family. I’m sure they’re based on my fears that he will just ‘snap’ one day (I’m sure they’re unfounded, just gut instinct) and of course they do nothing to alleviate these fears.

So, yes, I’m sure dreams can change how we view the world, if only by making us more aware of what’s going on in our subconscious. That’s why they’re a useful tool for many psychologists.

I think it does, even in small ways. One time I was dreaming about driving my Ferrari around.

I woke up in a good mood and was brushing my teeth thinking about taking the Ferrari to work when I realized I didn’t have a Ferrari. I was upset for the rest of the day. In a low key kind of way.

I know if I have nightmarish type dreams, I have a low key anxiety for part of the day untl I shake it off.

My response would be the same as those of @wonderingwhy and @Austinlad. All kinds of stimuli, including dreams, can give rise to insights. The insights are our own and come from within, regardless of what prompted them. Insight can indeed alter our view of the world and provide impetus to some kind of change.
