I’m seeing a lot of questions answered to suit American currency, shops, etc. Wondering if most people on here live over in America?
Are there any Europeans around ?
I’m from the UK :)

No and yes.
(Behave, Zen!)
I’m European :) Portuguese living in the UK!
Although Fluther is US based (offices are in San Francisco) we have members who live in all seven continents, including one who was at McMurdo station in Antarctica.
There are a few Europeans on here, but it is mainly Americans. From a Scotsman.
I would like to go to Antartica.
I would like to send @mrentropy to Antarctica.
(Just kidding, bud.)
So I’m not alone ? Nice to know ! Antartica.. thats brilliant
What @AstroChuck said.
There’s even a few who seem to be from other planets.
What?!?! You mean there are other countries that exist in the world besides America??? I’m shocked!!!!
Is San Francisco part of the U.S.?
@ChazMaz – I don’t have a globe right at my fingertips, but I think it’s in California (in the US) on the Pacific Ocean…
I’m just one humble American out of many here on Fluther. I’ve met a few from Europe too and they seem like very nice individuals to me.
@ChazMaz Only if it remains above water.
I don’t know. I’m from Asia.
I believe this site is for people worldwide.
I always thought California was another country.
Like France.
I’m originally Australian but have lived in Europe most of my life. Is this a poll?
I’m in the Netherlands.
I know Mattbrowne and Ragingloli are in Germany, Thammuz is in Italy and RareDenver is in the UK.
And there was another dude from the Netherlands here, but, um, I kind of forgot his name.
Who’s the guy in Antarctica and how does he get to be there!
Slightly OT, but I’m wondering if Fluther is ever going to implement a ‘search members by location’ feature. Actually, that would solve the problem the OP is asking so I guess it’s not OT.
I’ve seen ppl from Canada on here.
UK here, have also had the pleasure of living in Europe and the USA.
Dr J gets around
I am from Alpha Ceti IV and I was sent here to infiltrate the Terran governments to weaken them for invasion liberation. But I have found out that you humans are totally weak and inferior and will not stand a chance against our mighty invasion liberation force anyway, so why bother.
@ChazMaz – California and Florida are semi-independent “states” (that’s why most people just call it “The States”). They’re like separate countries with their own Governors (like the PM) and Legislature (like Parliament), but they’re all ruled by the Federal Government in Washington (they have TWO states named “Washington” which must be really confusing for them) which is ruled by the President (like a super-PM) and a Congress (like a super-Parliament) which, in turn, contains a Senate (like the House of Lords) and a House of Representatives (like the House of Commons).
American. Specifically southeastern US.
@Grisson Where the heck have you been? Long time no see.
@chyna would you believe Southeastern US?
@ragingloli – If you’re from Alpha Ceti IV, you can’t possibly be an oxygen breather. Earth is useless to you :-)
@Grisson I’ve heard you can get lost there.
@chyna Absolutely, and recently you could freeze to death if you did.
Shockingly, there are other regions.
Aussie aussie aussie!
I’m UK too (Northern!) :-)
I’m English, living in Scotland. That makes me a Sassenach
Sassenach is a word used chiefly by the Scots to designate an Englishman. It derives from the Scottish Gaelic Sasunnach meaning, originally, “Saxon”, from the Latin “Saxones”; it was also formerly applied by Highlanders to (non-Gaelic-speaking) Lowlanders[1]. As employed by Scots or Scottish English-speakers today it is usually used in jest, as a (friendly) term of abuse. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) gives 1771 as the date of the earliest written use of the word in English
I think we all tend to answer questions based on our own cultures and experiences.
That’s one of the great things about Fluther.com that we can see how people in cultures other than our own think and respond.
@daemonelson I don’t think anyone who has been on this site for more than a few hours has any illusion that this site is only American or British or a combination of the two. Australia is a fascinating country but different
I will agree that asking where’s the nearest store that sells armadillo oil for less that 3 Francs/oz. might not be very productive.
@scotsbloke my mum used to call me a Sassenach whenever I was annoying her, still makes me smile now when I think about it
@RareDenver – I hear you! (and that’s kinda sweet)
To be honest, I’ve spent more than half my life in Scotland so actually consider myself Scottish but am proud of my English roots and can do a cracking Mancurian and Devonian Accent.
@scotsbloke I’m half Scottish, half Scouse, and yes I could hear you laugh from here, we used to say mum was too tight to give us pocket money and on the odd occasion she did our dad nicked it :-)
I’m an Australian living in England as an English bloke or Smoggie to more precise!! Smoggie is slang for a Teessider, Teesside being where I live In County Durham England…….
<waves from the west coast of Scotland> born and raised in Glasgow, although not living there now.
hugglys all xx
Prairies of Canada, here. Hick might be the term.
We should also be hearing from our German, Dutch, and Swedish folks. I don’t see them yet.
I do think most flutherfolk are Americans, and many questions have those cultural assumptions behind them, but we have plenty of participation from outside the U.S. We welcome members from everywhere.
I’m from Canada. Despite popular belief, we are NOT America Jr.
the north west of England :)
I currently live in the south of England!
I’m Swedish but living in CA. The weather is so much better here.
I live in NZ currently. But im coming back to America soon :]
Wow thats amazing, people from all corners of the earth!
I am one of those other Dutch dudes… But hey… I could live anywhere…
<——New Zealand here :) and no, it is not part of Australia!
I live in America but don’t necessarily identify as an American
I wasn’t born here but I didn’t spend most of my life in the country where I was born (Azerbaijan)...some of my life was spent in Russia…and some in the UK and in South Africa.
I’m not from Europe (although I love Europe very much !)
I am from Singapore !
@sakura how on earth did I not notice you lived in Chorley??? you know I’m literally down the road! :-)
@chyna: Oops, sorry. Hmnb zzz – clik clik wazzle fwee – nik nik.
@lynneblundell unbelievable!!! How scary is that??
I lived in NZ for a year too, that’s when I started to use fluther!!
@Anonymous523 Joni Mitchell and others have made it real clear that Canadians don’t act like American Jrs. But then many Americans feel the same way. And BTW, Isn’t a bit ironic that we stole the demonym for two continents ‘American’, why not ‘United Statesian’ or USAan?
@Grisson I do try to be international about things. I have to.
Where are the Africans ??
In all my years on the internet I have never met anyone from Africa except for one person from South Africa. The continent is drastically under-represented.
I’ve come across two Africans on the interweb. One was from South Africa as well. As for the other one, I only stumbled upon a single anonymous post of his/hers, defending the continent in a thread complaining about it. (Pointing out that there are places in Africa where people have high enough living standards to have access to the internet.)
Technology aside, I suppose another thing that might keep certain parts of the world separated from you and me despite the interwebs, would be language. Nowadays many people all over the world work hard to learn English, but I can imagine there are also still places where nobody bothers to. For all I know there might be entire Swahili-speaking, Indonesian-speaking, Azerbaijani-speaking, Nepalese-speaking and Arabic-speaking communities on the internet that we never touch upon.
From what my Chinese classmate tells me, I get the impression that the Chinese-speaking internet is quite extensive. I’ve also been a member of some exclusively Dutch- and French-speaking web communities myself.
I thought I remembered a member from Egypt.
@Fyrius I take it you are referring to waradmiral there from South Africa?
@Fyrius – We should definitely try to invite some Africans!
@Fyrius markyy is from the Netherlands.
As for me… I’m from Georgia, the US state. Which is an experience. :P
To be honest I’m not convinced we should invite anyone, at least not because of their nationality.
I think wanting to have people from everywhere is just about as bad as wanting to exclude certain nationalities. In both cases you’re trying to control the demographics, be it to keep the population homogeneous or to get a full set. Just leave the stats well enough alone, mkay.
Affirmative action is racism too. Real tolerance means laisser faire. Because anyone is okay.
I was born here in America, US citizen by birth, but when I was 3 I lived and moved to Russia. Lived there for 5 years, then came back, then went back again, so on and so forth.
America here, guilty as charged.
