Is there a substitute for chalk in the weight room?

Asked by iRemy_y (550points) January 18th, 2010

I have extremely soft hands, so when I’m dead lifting 300lb+ i NEED chalk, otherwise my hands will seriously sting and get ripped up. I was wondering if there’s a substitute for chalk, like a spray or cream you put on before lifting. People tell me to get gloves, but i really dislike wearing gloves, and the chalk works fine. anyone got any ideas?

Have you tried the gloves with the fingers “cut off”? I don’t like that gloves eliminate the ability to feel, but with the open fingers you can feel and preserve your skin at the same time.

Also, if you spend a lot of time using your hands, and suffer through the blisters, eventually your hands will toughen up – you will get calluses on your hands and the blisters will stop.

So, if the chalk works fine, why are you looking for a substitute?

@La_chica_gomela alot of the time they run out of chalk, and i have to cut up my hands to work out.

@lilikoi D i know that i can use gloves, but i hate being the only person using something. I’m looking for a substitute to chalk, like a spray that acts like chalk on your hands

@iRemy_y: Hmm, then if the problem is that they run out of chalk, maybe the solution would be to bring your own chalk…
