How far can 5 dollars go in other countries?

Asked by Eli3000 (12points) January 19th, 2010

Students in my class were donating funds to help Haiti and I wanted to let some that could only donate a quarter or a few dollars know that something that small can make a big difference in many countries.

5 US dollars here in Scotland is £3.06. not a lot of money here (after saying that it’ll get a loaf of bread, litre of milk, bit of cheese and some eggs so will keep you fed for a few days) and as part of the relief aid it may be enough to buy a few bags of grain or rice and some water.

Every single penny helps in these situations. loose change and all.
The students in your class should feel pretty good about themselves.

here in Spain you could get about 6 kilos of rice or 16 liters of water (approx)

trying to give examples of things they may need in Haiti

It really doesn’t matter how far five dollars goes in Haiti, partly because the supplies have to be bought outside Haiti, but more because small contributions don’t matter by themselves, but matter a lot when many people do it. The Red Cross has collected over 8 million dollars through 10 dollar text message donations. That’s the power of lots of people giving a little.

But I’ve a friend who spent 9 months in India on very little money. He spent less than a dollar a day on food, lodging, and travel. So in some places, and depending on the level of luxury you expect, five dollars can go a long way indeed.

The big mac index can help you estimate this.

Really? Where I live $5.00 wouldn’t even get the bread, no kidding. If I was to buy all those things here it would cost at least $15.

Depend on what country you are talking about. In England, not too far, in Haiti or some African countries it would probably go a long way to feed your family.
