WHY would Iraq and Afghanistan send us relief money when Katrina hit?

Asked by Val123 (12739points) January 19th, 2010

We were/are at war with them. We’re tearing their country and their government up.

Acording to this link Afghanistan donated $100,000 to the hurricane victims and Iraq pledged $1 million to the Red Cross via the Red Crescent…..???

We weren’t at war with them. We had won the wars and new governments were elected, who asked us to stay there to provide security. Why wouldn’t a government that wanted to be our ally, was dependent on us for its security, want to help us with our disaster?

Even countries that were not our allies and were outright antagonistic with us offered aid (Cuba, Iran, Venezuela). In that case it is at least partly a diplomatic ploy to make us appear to be the bad guy for refusing their aid while our people are suffering. Meanwhile they look like the good guy willing to help the suffering people of their enemy.

You’re opinions do not seem to be melding with the facts yet you still insist upon adhering to it. Why?

See footnote 49 on that page. If any money (which I highly doubt) came from Iraq or Afghanistan it was surely cycled through from US/allied sources in the first place.

@tinyfaery What? Who were you talking to?

@kevbo It just seemed strange. I’ll go check. Thanks.

@Val123: I think it’s strange. You’re not the only one. I’d like to believe we’re not still at war with those countries, but the ongoing dead body counts seem to indicate otherwise. Oh well. I guess the new troops going into those countries are peacekeepers. Yes, that’s heavy sarcasm

@Snarp maybe Venezuela and Cuba identified with the victims of New Orleans and the fact that America the most powerful country in the Solar System, couldn’t get their shit together to assist their own people, mix up, muddled up political race of people that they are.

@Snarp THINK before you answer

@mammal Do you honestly mean to tell me that you think that Venezuelan and Cuban leaders believed that a shortage of personnel, supplies, or money had anything to do with problems in New Orleans after Katrina? And that they not only thought that, but somehow thought that giving aid that would be funneled through the same government that screwed up the recovery efforts in general would somehow be more effective?

Venezuela, Cuba, and Iran’s leaders are no more moral or just than the United States’. There isn’t a country on earth that gives aid just because it’s the right thing to do.
