How do I install Pidgin on Mac OS X?

Asked by rexpresso (922points) January 19th, 2010

I have been trying and trying and can’t seem to work out the steps.

Either I’m wrong or there are no packages available from Fink right now.

If you know how, please help me.

Suggestions of alternative programs like Adium are non-helpful, I really want to get Pidgin up and running.

Thanks!

There are no currently available easy-install packages of fink for mac right now. Unless you feel like compiling one yourself, there’s not a lot you can do but go with another program.

Thanks guys. What I wanted was to use groupsim.com that gives multi-user chat for MSN messenger. Unfortunately Adium doesn’t support displaying the nicknames of each person. It’s been told to me that Pidgin is the solution. Any other ideas?? Thanks for everything.

@rexpresso What do you mean by “displaying the nicknames” for users?

@Allie I mean right now it only says for example Group Name when I expected everytime someone spoke that the person’s nickname would show up. It works fine with MSN Messenger, it’s said to work well with Pidgin, but not with my Adium. Groupsim.com uses some tricks for sure. How much will I be able to use it from a mac is still a question. Thanks.

I thought Pidgin was just for Linux, but I’m not sure….

You can check out what they have here, but it doesn’t look like they have a native OS X version.

@lilikoi

Pidgin is for Linux and Windows.

Have a look for Adium, thats the OS X port of Pidgin. You can compile Pidgin for OS X, but its a bit more complicated.
