What do you think about the All American Basketball Alliance?

Asked by Strauss (23829points) January 20th, 2010

There is a new Basketball league in town, the AABA. According to this article in the Augusta Chronicle the founder is quoted as saying, “Only players that are natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race are eligible to play in the league.

He says he wants to get away from “street ball” and back to the fundamentals of the game.

Do you think this argument has any merit, or is it a thinly-veiled attempt to legitimize and re-institutionalize racism?

I see bigotry in this. I wish I could start an all non caucasian team and beat his ass.

I believe your information is out of date.

“The All-American Basketball Alliance was formed in 1977 (...) Eight teams competed in the only season of the AABA, which consisted of forty games and ran from 6 January 1978 until 2 February 1978.”

It’s to appease all those “Why can’t whites have a White Entertainment Channel?” people lol. But seriously…I don’t care because it doesn’t matter, people won’t be knocking their door down to be a apart of it anyways, besides other white people. There are already various sports clubs out there for everyone to join.

@Fyrius
On second thought, there seems to be something else going on. I read the article you linked to. Of course, it’s from this year. So are a number of other reports I’ve found.
Maybe it’s just two teams with the same name, one of them too recent to be on Wikipedia.

Bringing race into something saying that any non white American is basically a “bad influence” on a sport smells like racism to me. Race has nothing to do with “street ball” and “fundamentals of the game”. But, people can get away with a heck of a lot in America that others find morally wrong… Just look at the Westboro Baptist Church as a shining example of that.

Op-ed cartoon: Center jump between topless player and Klan-hooded, All-American Basketball Alliance-labeled player. Captioned “Shirts vs. Skins”.

@Fyrius No disrespect sir, but I believe it’s your info that is out of date. My link is to an article in the Augusta (GA) Chronicle dated January10, 2010.

Yes, so it would seem. Apparently there was a different basketball organisation with the same name in the late seventies.
This is the one you were talking about.

To actually answer the question: I think it’s amusing that these people think the descendants of Caucasian conqueror-immigrants are more “real” Americans than the descendants of black conqueror-immigrants.

Strauss's avatar

@Fyrius I think we should let the ”real Native Americans” decide that!
