I cant tell you how i shocked and frustrated I am right now. We are so poor , my mom works so much and she got calls from the Bank saying that she did not cash in money she put in to the ATM. She said we have to give the bank 300 dollar back , because we never made the deposit with cash. Has anyone ever experienced this? What would happen, what can we do? Thanks.

Bank of America screwed me. I lost my job and didn’t use my account until I found another job which was a couple of months. Yes, I did leave money in it too. My first pay check of my new job was taken to BoA in hopes of finally having money again and to my surprise the counter person says, that I owed the bank $600+. Long story short, this began my downfall in credit and I went to a check cashing place.
It sounds like a bad check or maybe it has not cleared yet? I don’t understand. Maybe you can explain more.
I am so sorry about that, axemusica.
No, Seventhsense, it isnt a bad check, she put in REAL MONEY, the bank said they never got it.
1) Never trust banks
2) Always ask for a receipt, whatever kind of transaction is involved.
Did your mother get a receipt for her deposit? If she did, take the receipt to the bank immediately. If she didn’t, unfortunately the only thing that’s left to do is learn the lesson for the future.
Tarp bailout banks lost a bunch of it! like, $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
@airowDee How awful. Good to report it, because maybe it was stolen by the person who counts the money? I would ask if they have video of the person who records all of the deposits taken in by the ATM. I doubt there is anything else you can do. This is a horrible lesson, from now on if you have cash, probably better to walk it into the bank yourself and get a reciept.
@qashqai I don’t see how a receipt would help from the ATM? There is no way to proves what was in the envelope?
@airowDee
I don’t know how there can be that kind of error and that definitely sucks. I’m sorry that happened to your mother.
Usually when an ATM is opened and funds are registered there are two people including a manager to confirm deposits. I imagine there is video surveillance at the ATM as well. It’s very difficult and highly risky for a teller to steal. As you can imagine banks take extreme measures to prevent this. I suppose it could be investigated further or maybe even some type of insurance claim could be filed but I imagine the burden of proof would rest on you to prove.
On my old ATM I could insert an empty envelope into the machine and enter a deposit for any number I chose but it wouldn’t be confirmed until the teller actually receivd the funds from the ATM. Now i’m not saying that this was the case but maybe there was an error in entering digits or funds were returned and it was imagined that this was a withdrawal or something. When i was younger I used to constantly have problems with banks and tellers and 99.9% it was my error somewhere. Now with tracking my funds online, fees etc. I never have issues and never need to balance my checkbook because I can tell instantly if a check has cleared.
The ATMs I use now with CHASE are amazing. I can deposit a handful of up to 50 LOOSE bills and it counts them and lists them according to denomination asks me to confirm the amount and gives me the option of depositing. If I disagree with the number it will return the cash. Likewise with a check it will actually show a photo image of the check and print a photo on the receipt. So far it’s worked flawlessly and the best part is that I don’t even have to fill out a deposit slip.
I’m sorry I can’t offer you more help but to pursue this with litigation would me WAY more trouble and cost then the return on the investment in a lawyer.
P.S- I never even enter a bank if I can help it. Tellers apparently are fed Demerol or something to make sure they don’t get too fast.
I am so sorry to hear about that. I have had money credited to the wrong account number, but it was solve. We use a bank now that takes a picture of everything you put in the machine, as you put it in. The cash goes into the slot with no envelope, and you can see the picture of it as it goes in. It works the same way with checks as they are deposited.
@YARNLADY
I had that once from a teller error at the drive thru only to almost drive off the road as I glanced at my balance- 75,000.00
I really wanted to keep that account. :)
