How do I pay with debit on amazon.com?

Asked by desiree333 (3241points) January 20th, 2010

It says that they accept all major credit cards AND debit cards but I have no idea on how to pay with a debit card on the website. Can anyone help me on how to pay with it, what buttons to press etc.(step-by-step instructions) Also my debit card is with TD Canada Trust, do you think that counts as a major company?

If it has a Visa or Mastercard logo just use it like a credit card.

I don’t think it does, I’ll have to check later because I’m going to bed now.

You might be able to use Pay Pal.

Both @SeventhSense and @VanCityKid are correct. A debit card just means, it’s tied directly to your bank account. Any internet based transaction will use your debit card like a credit card. Technically you could use your debit card for any transaction as a credit card, unless you have some sort of block put in place by your bank. Although, even after all that you’re still skeptical. Use @VanCityKid suggestion. I think Amazon is one of the companies that use PayPal.

@desiree333
Just follow the prompts. I’m sure it’s simple.

@Axemusica – Do you know why online sites don’t take debit card as payment?

Axemusica's avatar

@VanCityKid I do not. Do you mean why they use it as credit? Why?

VanCityKid's avatar

@Axemusica – I was just wondering why debit cards are never accepted as payment but credit cards and pay pal are.

Axemusica's avatar

@VanCityKid oh, I thought you knew, but I think it’s because debit immediately takes out the money and the website isn’t tied directly to something that can make the transaction instant, so it merely uses it as a credit card. Don’t quote me on that, it’s just what I think.

@VanCityKid
The infrastructure to process payments through Visa & Mastercard is more extensive and more streamlined and expedient. It’s vastly simpler for a merchant account than having to process payments through what could be thousands of different individual banks.

My debit card has no Visa or Mastecard symbol or anything but on the very bottom there are a bunch of words, and one of them is actually “visa” but its not a logo/different font or anything. Does this mean I just put it under Visa? And do I just put the last 3 numbers on the front of the card for the security code?

Axemusica's avatar

@desiree333 um, there’s usually directions when you are filling these things out on the website you’re purchasing from. As for it being Visa, I’m not sure, but if you try it and it doesn’t work then I guess you would know, right?

@desiree333
Try using it somewhere like a grocery store but when prompted say “Credit” and don’t enter your pin but sign. If it goes through, there’s your answer. My guess is that it will work as a credit card but will just withdraw funds from your checking account like a debit card.

desiree333's avatar

@Axemusica Yes, one day I’ll just try it. I don’t think there is really insturctions though, and no option for debit at all.

@desiree333
Is there a # and an expiration date? On the back should be a 3 digit CCV(?)
A little trivia:
If a card begins with a 4 it’s Visa. If it begins with a 5 it’s Mastercard.
Just try it. The worst that will happen is they will say “transaction denied”.

Axemusica's avatar

re-read this and this. There won’t be an option for debit.

@SeventhSense There’s no CCV, but if they say you can pay with debit, why should I have one? Also why wouldn’t it work? My card is a debit card from TD Canada Trust, so why wouldn’t it work?

A debit card is a debit card is a debit card.
