Which are the states in the United States where cereal production is concentrated?

Asked by arturodiaz (553points) January 21st, 2010

I am making an investigation regarding the different policies towards agriculture taken since NAFTA by the governments of México, United States and Canada. México is still extremely inefficient in comparison to our colleagues in the north, even after the free trade agreement which is supposed to encourage development and competitivity.

Go to the University library and find a good atlas of the United States. It will have maps showing production of various crops across the U.S., including grains.

I could do the research for you but am not going to.

I’ll get you started with a website too. And here’s the root site.

Scroll down the page for maps like this one of acres of corn for grain harvested.

Man I love this stuff. These are great maps. I could attack this as sounding like a homework question, but the U.S. government has such great research sources available if one knows where to look, so thanks for making me look this up. I love geography.

@Snarp thank you, I already had done research but did not knew about USA government statistics site. Already browsing all over the site. :D

Man, I’m so into this. Here are the maps you need:

Barley
Oats
Sorghum
Rice
Wheat
Corn
Rye

Watch out, some are dot maps and some are choropleth, so they don’t reflect amounts in the same way. Not sure if you need more underlying data. Comparing those crops to other crops is interesting too. It shows how specialized an area is in growing a particular crop.

Related, but not related, kelloggs and post “cereals” http://apps.detnews.com/apps/history/index.php?id=146 many don’t know the history. The short version is the Kelloggs brothers were Seventh Day Adventists who had a “sanitarium.” Some have said it was a place to rest, take a mental health break so to speak and treat physical health ailments as well. Their religious beliefs included being vegetarians, and in their facility they served cereals complying with this philosophy. CW Post had been a patient there. Bot the Posts and the Kelloggs brothers went on to market their products to the general public,

@Snarp I love your maps.

The actual corporate operations of Kellogg are in Battle Creek, Michigan. I don’t know how much cereal production is done there, though.

@noyesa I knew a girl who worked as a flake inspector during the summer. Checked for the burned ones.
