Why does my work monitor buzz when there's a lot of black on the screen?

Asked by RocketSquid (3486points) January 21st, 2010

Whenever I first turn my computer on and my black desktop pops up, my monitor makes this loud buzzing noise. As soon as I open up a webpage or cover up a good portion of the screen with a folder, it stops. If everything’s closed or I open up a webpage that’s mostly black or a dark color, it starts up again.

It’s a fairly new LCD monitor, and with the exception of the buzzing the monitor works great. Any ideas on what could be causing it, and what I could do to fix it?

Try turning the brightness down on the monitor and see if it goes away.

Sounds like it’s fucked, you say it’s fairly new so I would take it back.

@RareDenver Thankfully it’s not one I paid for, but I’d have to get approval from IT before I get a replacement. Since it’s working fine and doing this occasionally, I doubt they’ll give me the go ahead.

@RocketSquid I bet if you were signed off sick for 2 weeks with migraines caused by a constant buzzing noise at your workstation IT would soon be told to replace it.

IT departments do well to remind themselves who their customers are and that’s everyone else in the organisation.

@RareDenver Hey! I am one of those very assholes you just described!!!

@RocketSquid What company is the monitor / computer combo?

@mowens It’s a DCL monitor, Lenovo PC.
