Per the Bible and/or any religious text you choose, what happens to hypocrites?

Asked by EgaoNoGenki (1164points) January 22nd, 2010

To start off, this is a prime example of hypocrisy.

Now, what does the Bible say about what happens to hypocrites? And how others are supposed to punish them?

If you’re not that much for the Bible, what does your preferred religious text say about them?

(Please cite the exact sub-books and chapters of the verses when you quote them. Thanks.)

I don’t think we can trust any deity to take care of hypocrites for us. It’s up to us to call them out for their hypocrisy and mercilessly ridicule them when appropriate.

We do not require reference to holy books to hold people responsible for saying they believe in one thing and acting contrary to those professed beliefs.

@Dr_Lawrence Although they do make it quite satisfying when it’s religious hypocrisy.

For those of you who don’t prefer to cite any form of scripture, how do you suppose are the appropriate consequences for hypocrisies?

fundevogel's avatar

Appropriate legal action should their hypocrisy involve a crime and public ridicule otherwise. I also maintain the right to ridicule criminal hypocrites from a safe distance.

Unfortunately, there is no cosmic justice scheme and some evil will always go unpunished. Hypocrites that are obviously so may lose friends, lose influence, lose the trust of employers etc, but in the end they may not be worse off at all.

I can’t believe I remembered this one….hard to forget.

“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.” (Matthew 7:1–5 RSV)

Only a society that prizes honesty, integrity, and personal responsibility would recognize any thing called hypocrisy. According to what I see and hear, most of the people are in favor of pick and choose which laws and ethics to follow and the right to choose is more important than the observance of any law or standard.
