How much current can I draw at maximum from a 6V lantern battery?

Asked by HeroicZach (195points) January 22nd, 2010

I’m thinking about using a battery such as this: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103180&clickid=prod_cs#

Not exactly that one but you get the idea. Anyway, I was wondering if I could get 2A of current out of that battery, or if you think that would exceed its maximum current output. Any help you may provide would be greatly appreciated!

at max you could get about 2.5 volts out of that.

@jackm I’m pretty sure I’ll get 6V out of that regardless…I’m talking about current, not voltage.

@HeroicZach
I am sorry, I meant amps. You will get 2.5 amps

After some extensive testing, you’re absolutely right – I can pull about 2.3/2.4 amps out of a lantern battery I found in the lab (I’m in high school and I’m good friends with the chemistry staff, so no, don’t get jealous, I don’t actually have a lab, darn).

@HeroicZach – not Dr. Evil, with an evil lab?
