What is this one game called, and where can I find it?

Asked by efritz (3255points) January 22nd, 2010

So there’s this game that I used to play on a friend’s computer where this ball would bounce off of walls and you’d have to prevent it from falling into an abyss by navigating this bar thingy at the bottom of the screen for the ball to bounce on . . .

Break out?

Yeah, it’s called Breakout; it’s a classic game from the 70’s that has been cloned a billion times.

It sure is. Thanks :)

Breakout… A game Atari asked Steve Jobs to create and he pushed it off to Wozniak while keeping the credit.

@mrentropy

Huh? Breakout was created by Nolan Bushnell.

Breakout Play it right now—free—at ClassicGamesArcade.com

I had a handheld version called “Blockbuster”, part of Milton Bradley’s Microvision game cartridge system ca. 1979–80. It featured an LCD display 16×16 pixels monochrome; 2 buttons; 1 rotating knob; & a small repertoire of sound effects. Anyone who picked up Blockbuster immediately disappeared into a vortex of mental concentration.

Do you still happen to have this Microvision?

@Ivan Actually I’m not sure—I think it was among a great deal of my stored belongings destroyed in a basement flood during an exceptional meteorological event in 2004 while living in Chattanooga, TN—300 miles north of the gulf coast. The event? Hurricane Ivan—your namesake!

I know of another. One of my best friends, who died prematurely 5 years ago, owned a Microvision system & most of the games. His widow might still have it. Sorry to be morbid. You can probably find it on eBay.

I was just curious, because a working Microvision (without screen rot) is worth a little bit of money to the right buyer. I’ve never actually seen one in person.

@Ivan It was conceived by Nolan Bushnell and another person. They assigned the job to Steve Jobs. Jobs asked Wozniak to make it.

I used to have a Microvision. For all I know it’s still in my parents garage.

Interesting. You guys need to get your rare video game collectibles out onto the market!
