Are there any good download managers for books?

Asked by Sonnerr (588points) January 22nd, 2010

I have an iPod Touch and I installed the Download Manager App and it works great for YouTube videos, but I can’t seem to find a good website that’ll let download books. It says that the compatible files include PDF files. Is there a site where it would make downloading a book more easily. Preferably, is there a link that would direct me to a place where downloading is made easy and not a task?

(btw I’m looking for a book called “The Sorcerer’s Stone: The Beginners Guide To Alchemy.)

I’m not sure, unfortunately, I’d suggest trying a torrent for that purpose (disclaimer: probably illegal). The main issue i see is that YouTube videos are not protected by anything, while most PDFs of new books are protected by DRM and you’d have to pay for them, in which case something like Amazon should suit your needs. For something no longer copyrighted, I suggest Project Gutenberg. The book you’re looking for is copyrighted, and so any way to get it that would not be paying would be illegal. If that’s what you’re looking for, I’m sorry. If you don’t mind paying, I believe Amazon sells PDFs of books.

But I highly suggest not reading books on an IPod. You’ll strain your eyes to no end. If reading electronic books is something you want to do often, I suggest something along the lines of the Kindle or Nook. They use a very different screen type, called ‘E-Ink”, which will not strain your eyes (at least, no more then a hard copy book would), but that also involves spending a decent chunk of money.

So, I probably haven’t really answered your question, but I hope I’ve helped.

Edit: Huh, apparently a PDF is simply not available, it seems. The publisher did not create one. In that case, I think you’re just out of luck. Sorry!

Kindle! All the way. I am not sure what you are looking for in terms of readers but I love using my kindle on iphone. Reading all the twilight books on it. Don’t know if i misinterpreted your question or not.

Try Stanza.
It’s free and it’s the best.
It doesn’t have the latest books for free but you can buy them.

@hellboy, @moviefreak

Warm welcome to you too. The collective is a big place, and just for your personal information, yes, I did. My original question was to try and find suggestions on all sorts of download managers. So as to choose the creme of the crop, so to speak. @moviefreak , I don’t mean to banter, but what the heck are you talking about?
