I've been wearing a wrist brace often to protect and injury, now above where it sat my muscle is bruised and swelling, opinions?

Asked by 12_func_multi_tool (803points) January 23rd, 2010

I had a very big injury to my wrist, a large laceration a severed artery and at least one tendon. My wrist brace is worn loosely sometimes I fall asleep with it on. The wrist profile has been altered, which I don’t mind, but this swelling and bruising is worrisome. Am I not exercizing enough or is it just the brace? Or another symptom of the injury?

You should go back to your doctor and have it checked out. I had a knee injury and they explicitly told me not to sleep with the brace on because of swelling. The fact that you have swelling and bruising would indicate that there are circulation problems, and in light of the past artery issue, you want to make sure that’s okay.

I’m not a doctor but it sounds to me as if somehow it’s too tight, or you’re pushing on it while you sleep, and that is causing the bruising and swelling above it. By all means
see a doctor. Feel better!!

The go back to the Dr suggestions are solid…in the meantime you could loosely wrap a bath towel around the brace and secure with an ACE bandage at bedtime to make it bulky enough where you won’t as easily lay on your injury while you sleep.

Applying cold to reduce inflammation may help but seeing your doctor is the only wise choice.
