I have a new mole. What kind of doctor should I see?

Asked by amnorvend (272points) January 23rd, 2010

I have a new mole on my toe that I figure I should get checked out. Thus far, I’ve been told I should see:

* A dermatologist
* A podiatrist
* A physician

Which kind of doctor should I see?

start off with a dermatologist since they are skin doctors. if they dont know it wont hurt to just go down the list.

A dermotologist can evaluate the mole the best.

A Veterinarian.

A dematologist can best evaluate it for possible skin cancer. Your GP or family doctor can probably do the same at a lower cost though.

Hopefully the dermatologist is a physician.

@bigboss – Butters should be saying… “Well gee guys, I don’t know, I don’t want to get in trouble”

dermatologist – for the reason @bigboss said. I’d put my money in a skin specialist over a GP, who may not have the foresight and experience to refer you to a skin specialist, if that was what was needed. GP’s can only diagnose and treat general maladies and conditions.

Oh, and a foot doctor (podiatrist) generally isn’t the best guy to look at skin conditions, even on your foot. They generally just diagnose and treat foot-related conditions such as bunions and in-step issues (ie bones and your gait).

I guess I’m going against the stream here, but I’d start with a GP/FP/family doctor. FPs are trained to evaluate and manage a wide range of health issues and that includes basic skin conditions and moles. If they are completely confident it is benign and it is causing discomfort, they can remove it or freeze it. If it looks questionable, they can biopsy it to find out what it is. If they are still uncertain, or if biopsy shows cancer, they’ll refer you to a dermatologist, and you’ll usually get in to see the specialist more quickly with the biopsy results and referral than if you call to schedule it yourself. If you’re not comfortable with how your FP handles it, then self refer to a derm specialist.

Your primary physician/family doctor should be able to recommend a specialist, if she thinks you need one. Visit your own doctor first.
