Is it possible to become immune to sleep aids?

Asked by Shield_of_Achilles (1906points) January 24th, 2010

I’ve taken a good amount of nyquil over the past few hours and I’m still not asleep. Anyone know what the deal is?

READ the package, an overdose will keep you awake.

If your not fighting a cold a small shot of alcohol (brandy) will do the same thing

DON’T DRINK ALCOHOL AFTER ANY MEDICINE.

Yes, you can develop a tolerance:

“Drug tolerance. You may have to take more and more of the sleep aid for it to work, which can lead to more side effects.”

Any ideas on how to force myself to sleep?

You could try some manual tension release.

How much is a “good amount”?

Yes I took benadryl for several months every night and after awhile I was taking up to two of them a night. I built up an extreme tolerance to all sleep-aids and was having to take more at 5 in the morning to keep sleeping. After a couple months I was constantly itchy and was scratching until I bleed. This all was because I took Diphenhydramin which is what almost all sleep aids have in it.

For alternatives:
-Try working out late at night. Staying active throughout the day will exhaust you and make you sleep naturally.
-Turn off the TV, put away the laptop, and the phone.
-Avoid caffeine late at night
-Get up early
-Also orgasms can help with falling asleep

Take Benadryl you will be out cold in 22 minutes.

@chyna I think I may be at like 8 tablets. I wasn’t really keeping track.

@sjmc1989 That’s horrible. I’ve scratched myself till I bled before, but that’s only because I was bored as hell in this one class and zoned out.
may need assistance with that last listed item

@Cruiser Used to take that for poison ivy as a kid. Doesn’t do a thing for me anymore.

8 tablets is extreme. Are you taking it as a cold aide or a sleep aide? If you need a sleep aide, you may have to get a prescription for something stronger such as ambien. Only your doctor can prescribe this.

Shield_of_Achilles's avatar

@chyna I can’t sleep because I’m depressed. I don’t need a prescription, I’m just tired of seeing the sun rise and set everyday. I have a bit of a sinus infection, so it’ll help with that too, but it’s mainly so ill be seeing clouds for the next 8 hours.

Sure thing and I’ve seen it have the opposite effect of making someone zippy.

The reason why you’re still awake is that you’re on the computer asking people why you’re still awake.

You may benefit from learning a technique called progressive muscle relaxation. While it is used frequently to treat anxiety it works equally well as a preparation for sleep.

Here is a link to a document that will teach you the technique.

Since relaxation is required to be able to sleep, this technique is a good start to prepare for sleep.

Oh I love when I actually laugh out loud at something! I can’t tell if he was kidding or not…funny either way :)

Sorry about that. Stuff kicked harder than a Deagle. But I found myself still waking up at night. I couldn’t move very well, but then again I couldn’t sleep well either. Hate to say it but my problem pretty much went unsolved.

Why can’t I sleep? X_X
