General Question

I need advice on raising money to help a kind family in need.

Asked by Falkor (142points) January 25th, 2010

I have been staying with a family(Mom: 42, Dad: 39, daughter: 2, 6 rescue dogs, 2 rescue cats). They were kind enough to allow me to board in the attic of their home until I get my feet on the ground. I contribute to food and utilities, but cannot afford rent right now(they told me I can pay rent in March, but I plan to once I get a job).

Anyways, they are also struggling with money. Dad is desperately making the full effort to get work(a painter), mom is an at-home mom.

A huge 120 year old tree just fell in their property. They had half of it removed two days ago(and actually tapped into his life insurance policy, the money he was going to use on mortgage), then the rest collapsed last night in the street, on the fence, and in the yard :( They are drowning, it is one thing after another(other stuff I cannot mention)...

I know this is the facts of life, but they are the kindest, most giving, considerate group of people I have met here. Any suggestions on how I can help? I wanted to make a flyer to ask the neighbors and community but do not know where to begin, or if that is appropriate. The tree was a beautiful acacia tree, could they sell the wood or something…

How very kind of you to be so considerate! Lurve.

I just found this and it seems reasonable. There are some good ideas for fundraisers and gives you some ideas about how to get the word out. A good jumping off point for you, anyway. Good luck!

Edit: Here is another link. It mentions to tell potential contributors what goal you’re trying to reach. Also be sure to make known anything the family has done for the community, so contributors feel that they are giving back.

Locate a bank close to you. pay a visit and talk to a bank officer and tell this person, what you have told the world. a bank officer will listen to you. he will assist you into opening an account under your “adopted parents” name. once this is accomplished, its up to you to make flyers to distrubute in their neighborhood. you can leave the flyers on mailboxes, but not inside the box. on your flyer, explain the situation, your name, phone number, email address and account number and a brief description of your cause. a photo of the damage would be greatly helpful. people will help, if they understand the cause and are convinced its not a fraud they are giving to. you have your work cut out for you. john

Wow, thanks ubersiren and john65pennington. Those were great suggestions. I browsed the ehow page, and got a few good ideas. I like the bake sale ideas, and garage sales. I plan go to a bank after we clear the yard today. Do you think I will be able to do this even though I have poor credit? I mean I would not have access to the account, but maybe just getting it started would require good credit…

Its doubtful that the bank officer will check your credit, since you will not have access to the money in their bank. they will ask for your identification, so take whatever you have. in a situation like this, trust is the name of the game. some people making a donation may ask for a receipt from you, so be sure to take a small tablet and an ink pen with you. on the receipt, write Received of——————-on 1–25-10, $25 cash for the————fund. be sure to sign your name to the receipt. its all about taking care of business.

While this may not help monetarily, I would suggest having a community dinner. The little things like not having to worry about food can be a really good spirit booster as well as something the community can begin to look forward to.
