What is a good point and shoot digital camera?

Asked by normaneo (45points) January 25th, 2010

I’d like at least a 20x optical zoom, good low light capture and decent capture/write speeds?

How big or small do you want? That can make a big difference

Something just a little smaller than an SLR, I have large hands and I’m a bit clumsy so I don’t like all of these micro cameras

I don’t think you’re going to get a point and shoot with 20x optical zoom. The lens needed to provide for that has to be much bigger than a point and shoot camera could handle.

Canon makes a point and shoot with 12x optical zoom. See how big the lens is? Is that too small for your hands?

Yes, it is a bit small. I like another model I saw from Nikon that looked more like an SLR. I just haven’t used any of them and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

I have the Canon G11. It is an amazing camera. It is a bit larger than most “point and shoot” cameras but the image quality is more than worth the extra size. It is only 5x optical zoom, but @aprilsimnel is right, you’re not going to find a point and shoot with 20x.

I am used to using DSLRs and I just wanted something a little smaller for when I don’t want to lug around extra lenses and accessories. This camera is perfect for those times.

I suggest going to a camera store and handling some of the cameras they have in stock.

My Canon S5 IS has 12x optical zoom. People are always impressed with the shots I get from a distance. I once shot a leopard in an acacia from so far away I couldn’t even see it with my bare eyes. The image quality was so good I can blow it up to 3’ x 5’ and it still looks incredible.

Cybershot by Sony is a fantastic digital camera. its amazing how clear the photos are. its at WalMart(dirty word) and the price is right. 6 mega pixels. Consumer Report Magazine lists it in the top five of smaller digital cameras and i understand why.

I have a new Nikon CoolPix L20 & I love it. It takes great pictures & is easy to use. It’s a 10 MP. Priced around $120. Just a thought.

Engadget’s competition for the best point and shoot under $400.

I bought the winner, the Samsung SL820, for $180 on Amazon last month. I absolutely love it.
