Cannot cut thru discarded 105mm shell?

Asked by 12_func_multi_tool (803points) January 25th, 2010

I’m trying to cut thru these casings with a manual hacksaw to make a pair of bells or windchimes. New HSS blade about 24tpi no progress. Do I need Bi -metal or is this some nickel alloy or other?

How about using an acetylene torch to make the cut?

@Bluefreedom too messy, I can’t afford that kind of equipment. anyways choose a plasma cuttoer over oxyacetelyne any day. I admit that would do the job

HSS isn’t going to do it (too soft)

I would try http://www.amazon.com/USA-Tungsten-Carbide-Gritted-Hacksaw/dp/B000AHJFVS/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1264520614&sr=8-8

It’s basically an abrasive bonded to the hacksaw blade (you can get them at most hardware stores). It’ll cut through anything, but it will be SLOW very very slow.

You could also try a very fine toothed tungsten carbide blade, which might do better, but I’d just try the grit blade. If you are using a toothed blade, try using paraffin or oil while cutting, it’ll make it go a bit better (and help with chip removal).

@grumpyfish yes i was going to get cutting fluid, I’m not going w/ abrasive., afraid it’ll get loaded and I hate abrasivees excet on chopsaw and angle gringer. If there is a harder blade ill get that and maybe 12–18 t p i
as you see I can’t type, thanks you so much
