Why does it take us so long to invent (or impliment) simple things?

Inspired by Jim Gaffigans question about midway through this video about the upside down ketchup bottle.

What other “inventions” have only recently been implemented that took a surprisingly long period of time to arrive?

Chicken in a can. It’s the newest product to hit the shelves here. It makes sense because we have tuna and red meat in cans, but not chicken. No idea why it hasn’t been around for longer…

@Zen_Again I’ve never tried it, but it seems everything else in a can isn’t gross. (Maybe to the exception of Spam).
