My mom is American, can I get citizenship?

Asked by goldmann (4points) January 27th, 2010

Hello, my mom was born in America and lived there until she was 7 years old. I was born outside of the USA, and I was never filed to the US Embassy as an American born abroad.

I am 20 years old, is there any way I can get the american citizenship?

If you are born to an American citizen, then you are an American, if you claim the citizenship. You may be a natural-born citizen of the place where you were born, too, so for now you likely hold dual citizenship, and you’ll have to decide (I think) “which one” to claim. There may be some countries that allow you to hold dual citizenship. (I don’t know if we’re one of them, but I tend to think not.)

your mom has to file a consular report of birth abroad. then, she should apply for a us passport. she will have to make an appointment with the us consulate in your country. it’s pretty easy you download the form off their website. because you were born outside the us, you will then have to petition for citizen ship. go to the website it’s pretty easy- I mean once she files a consular report of birth abroad for you, you just go get a us passport at the consulate-

I think it may also depend if she gave up her american citizenship and became a citizen of another country before you were born.
Here is a site that may answer some of your questions.

the best way to get this worked out is with the help of a qualified US immigration lawyer. A lot of people are willing to spend thousands of dollars to get their feet on US soil, without the benefit of legal immigration, let alone garnering USC. I think it would be wise for you to spend a little bit on legal services if you’re serious about this.

In which of the Americas do you desire citizenship, North, South, or Central?

@UScitizen . . . I know you’re trying to crack a ajoke, but the fact of the matter is North, South and Central Americas are not countries, therefore have no citizens. . .

North America and South America are continents, while Central America is s the southernmost, isthmian portion of the North American continent.

As per the Child Citizenship Act, persons who were 18 years or older on February 27, 2001 are not qualified for citizenship. Someone who was over the age of 18 as on February 27, 2001, may be qualified to apply for a citizenship certificate by filling Form N 600 under the law in effect before the enactment of the CCA.
