Would I be able to safely shrink an 50/50 acryllic/cotton sweater in the mircowave?

Asked by Zone36 (416points) January 28th, 2010

I don’t own a dryer. I really like this sweater and after a few wearings it gets stretched out. I want to restore it to that nice snug fit But would I be able to wash a sweater in a basin full of hot water and then put it in the microwave for a little bit to shrink it?

I’m sure if I keep it in for too long something bad will happen.

But say for a minute or two and then hang dry it in the sun.

Would it work and more importantly would it not be ruined?

If it would work, what would be a good way to go about it?

This sounds like a bad idea. I doubt it will work and you run the unnecessary risk of damaging your sweater and the microwave.

Find a few quarters and go to the laundromat.

You need a different type of heat than that found in a microwave. I agree with JohnPowell, go find some quarters.

Here’s a tutorial.

Thanks for the info. Normally if I do a normal load back at home that’s enough to do the trick. It just gets it back to it’s original state.

But where I’m at right now, I only have a washing machine and then I hang dry my laundry.

So that’s why I was wondering if there was an alternative.
