Tonight is supposed to be the brightest full moon of 2010. Gets me thinking about full moon superstitions and stories. Know of any?

freaks come out under the full moon
a harvest moon reminds me of paradise..
A local legend comes to mind. Back in the 1800’s a pioneer woman wondered the land under a full moon, looking for her missing son. she paused by a pine and stared right up at the moon. Later that night, she died. No one knows why. Her’s son’s body was found the next day.
Some say if you wonder the path same she did and look up at the full moon from under the same tree as her, you’ve claimed the same fate.
Of course that’s a tall tale from the older generations. I don’t know how factual it is. And I’ve never heard of anyone dyin’ from staring at the full moon around here.
Aw. Makes me wish I were going to a rave. In a warm area, of course.
I saw the moon just now on the highway and it was seriously huge, and gleaming. Very white. It looked fake. And for some reason I keep thinking of Frankenstein.
My mom thinks a full moon causes some social chaos, like everyone gets real crazy or irritable or vocal and then weird stuff starts happening. Like people get into ridiculous arguments or do something they wouldn’t normally do, e.g. embezzle money from the convenient store they work at. I don’t know. She’s pretty superstitious I guess.
I used to be an operator, and we handled calls from the local jail.
You could tell when a full moon was by the craziness of the inmates.
Drinking piƱa coladas at Trader Vic’s, or what? ;)
@aprilsimnel. The American one in London and in Paris. Oh, and the one that Warren Zevon sings about also like the lyrics in your answer demonstrate. =)
I heard tonight’s moon referred to as a “Wolf Moon.” Anyone know why?
I live 250 miles from even a small city and we are more sensitive to daily celestial events because we can actually see them. When the moon is full out here, the livestock gets anxious and cows bellow throughout the night, dogs that aren’t brought in bark non-stop, coyotes howl, domestic violence goes through the roof and accidents increase (I know that because my son works at the County jail), and people complain of not being able to sleep. If the moon can pull the ocean tides, and if mammals are composed of (a good percent ? ~ help someone?) water, doesn’t it just make common sense that the gravitational force of a full moon would affect our inner ‘tides’?
All I can think of, is that I hope it does something to my uterus.
The movie ‘Moonstruck’. La luna bella! Also, full-moon parties on the islands of Thailand.
“The finger pointing at the moon is not the moon.” That’s what it makes me think of.
@janbb this article says “This being the first full moon of 2010, it is also known as the wolf moon, a moniker dating back to Native American culture and the notion that hungry wolves howled at the full moon on cold winter nights.”
[edit] Wikipedia states that the full moon of every month is given a name.
I have memories of being a 911 dispatcher and how the need for police and hospitals seemed to increase. The officers were always a bit grumpy on the night of a full moon.
Mostly though, I think of time spent camping in the deserts of Southern Utah. Happy sigh.
My friend is a nurse and says the ER is very busy during a full moon. Tonight my dog won’t lay down. She is nervous and keeps walking to the front and back doors. She is making me nervous.
I’m in such a foul mood this evening. Can I blame it on the moon?
Damn you moon!
Certain full moons make me very excited. Perhaps I’ve got a bit of the wolf in me?
The Green Manalishi (Fleetwood mac one, not JP)
It also brings my mind at peace
higher tides and crazy people !!
Looking at it again right now. It’s like a light bulb has been turned on and there’s a wide ring of light all around the moon. Any else see it? I’m so glad it’s a clear night here.
@absalom There is an aura of sorts. The clouds reflecting the light maybe?
Right now we’ve got some beautiful Full Moon On Snow.
Ohhhhh, the meaning of life!
More photons. Very spectacular at night in the winter with lots of snow.
@mattbrowne
For the briefest moment, I thought that you were referring to photon torpedoes, a la Star Trek. Made the second line a glorious bit of understatement :D
