I’m watching it right now because Ellen Page is hosting. I don’t have the answer but you are right. Just about nothing has been funny, not even the cartoon.
We rarely watch it because we usually find only one skit funny. We’re watching it now and it’s simply horrible… Nothing is funny anymore. Needs a new cast maybe?
I would think the writing. If the jokes were funny I would settle for poor acting.
A lot of it is writing, a lot of it is cast. What it comes down to, mainly, is that SNL is no longer “subversive” or “anti-establishment”, as it was at its inception. It IS the establishment now. Other shows and other comedians are much edgier and therefore more interesting, and the good writers get their own shows or careers, leaving SNL with the dregs.
I didn’t think Ellen Page did a good job acting in this week’s episode. There were no subtleties, I felt she exaggerated all of her characters and sometimes I couldn’t even make out what she said. On the other hand, Fred Armisen always delivers. I found his College of Excellence and Nicolas Fehn bits hilarious.
Yeah I watched if for Ellen Page and I was very dissapointed.
I worked late and only caught the “becoming a lesbian” sketch and didn’t laugh once.
I wish i had seen Wilco though.
skits are becoming a thing of the past. The big issue is also education in the American audience. Writers are more isolated today than ever before therefore resulting in flat, brainless material, not to mention you can only go so long before you realize you’re so established, you can get away with tripe and people will still watch it. Its similiar to what happened with Rolex in the mid nineties.
The bigger issue is the deteriorating intelligence of the American audience. We don’t understand subtlety anymore, film has suffered this fate as well.

SNL magic
Just a thought here…We’ve out grown it…We watched it when we were younger and found it funny and entertaining…As we “matured” the silliness kinda became nonsensical. I’m sure that a younger generation is enjoying the show, and will tire of it in time, as it becomes someone’s else’s decade. Probably why our parents did not approve (understand) the music we listened to…
well I’m 22 and I’ve never liked it, with the exception of the Tina Fey and Will Ferrell era.
Personally I think the show is better than ever and is stocked with some enormous talent. Amy Poelher is already living legend, Will Forte is all encompassingly funny, Armisen has brought some of the smartest and most nuanced performances ever on the show. Gotta say though, Keenan Thompson is underutilized, he is a game genius- “Keenan and Kel” was the Amos and Andy of the 90’s.
Still, that might not stop the show from sucking, which happens because SNL operates on the principal that it should be topical and relevent and is much less concerned with being actually funny, guess you could say its in the DNA of the show-to suck.
Are you kidding me Zombo? SNL is one of the best freaking shows on TV!!! I will admit it has gotten a bit…neh…but it is still amazing! Plus, think about the comedians that do that. They go out on live TV and try to make you laugh. Comedy is one of the hardest things in show business.
Oh and also. we do NOT use the word suck and SNL (or Saturday Night Live) in the same sentance! EVER!!!
Though I will admit it has lost some of it’s humor, but it is still funny!
