um just buy paint thinner

From what I understand about TSP, it is used as a cleanser prior to painting. However, when used on existing paint, it can leave a de-glossing effect. I wouldn’t risk it.

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities what should I use, if you would know, would dish wash soap, boiling water work?

it’s a really really old house that probably was painted in the early 90’s. it would look ok if it were washed I think. I don’t want to hire a painter and have scaffolds in there. I just want to wash it, I think its cigararette smoke and stains

I think if you washed it with some mildly soapy hot water, and rubbed it with a nylon-bristle brush it would work well, and do less damage than the TSP.

I’ve used tsp everywhere for years with no problems except red skin! I would agree to not use it on laminate.

I think jeffgoldblumsprivates is the opposite of correct. And what he suggests would be much harder work! We don’t want that!
I use tsp on everything. Yes, use rubber gloves, it’s caustic; and use goggles too, because the last thing you want is any of that dripping back down into your eyes. It won’t take the gloss off paint, but it will hurt living tissue.
You might just call the paint store and check with them, if these are too many different advices.
I don’t like painting ceilings either. Horrible.
