Does anyone have a solution for round ligament pain during pregnancy?

Asked by ubersiren (15208points) January 31st, 2010

Here is a description of what it is.

I’ve had it with both pregnancies, and it seems to be worse with this one, though, I may just be forgetting what it was like last time. I don’t want to use the word excruciating when there are women with real pregnancy problems, but I will say it hurts a lot. It’s very hard to even walk sometimes, especially first thing in the morning or when I’ve been sitting a while and try to stand.

Has anyone had experience with relief of this pain? Tylenol doesn’t seem to work. I tried a heating pad, too, but it’s difficult to reach my groin area (for my gigantic belly), let alone hold a pad there long enough to do any good, and the heating pad instructions say not to sit on it (or lean on it, or pin it between my legs) for safety reasons.

I’ll take any suggestions. Thanks for reading.

For heat therapy, instead of a heating pad you could try a rice bag. It’s softer, more flexible and safer. If you can’t find one to buy or sew one yourself, a sock half filled with raw rice and tied at the top will work. Microwave it for about a minute and a half, check the temperature before you use it. Along with the heat, I think I remember finding some relief lying on my side with my belly supported by a pillow and of course one between my knees.
Perhaps MagRags will be in with some advice.

@wilma I do have a rice bag type body wrap. I’ll give that a try. I don’t know that it gets very hot, but it’s better than nothing!

Still open to other suggestions! I’ll try anything, even your most trusted magic potions.

@ubersiren well then, if you want a magic potion, I might suggest a blend of Chamomile and Oatstraw for tea. Have some and try to rest and relax. :)

Most women find it worst when they’re up and around – is that how it is for you? Are you using an abdominal binder during the day? If not, it can make a difference – it helps support the uterus so the ligaments don’t get tweaked so easily.

And you’re not just imagining it being worse this time a round. The relaxin hormone that loosens up connective tissue seems to flow earlier and reach higher levels with each pregnancy.

Crawling on the floor of a little pool helped me. And putting ice packs up there and the Bed Buddy (hot and cold).

A firend of mine is sleeping in a recliner as it hurts too much to turn over and toget out of bed.

@MagsRags It’s worst when I first stand up after being still for a while (either sitting or lying down). It’s crippling. I can walk it off a bit, but then after a while walking hurts again, and standing still doesn’t hurt as bad. Does that make sense at all? No, I haven’t used anything for support… is an abdominal binder like the thing they put on me after my c-section last time? Like a velcro corset type thing? I’ll have to look into it because it’s becoming unbearable. Thank you for mentioning it. You’re always so helpful with my lady problems!

@Simone_De_Beauvoir That’s a good idea. Maybe I’ll get in the tub and sort of kneel down in the water for a while. Googling Bed Buddy

@faye Poor woman… tell her she’s not alone! I don’t have a recliner, sadly. :(

@ubersiren the Bed Buddy saved me on the way to the hospital too – I heated it up in the microwave, wrapped it around my underbelly with a scarf and it allowed me to survive the ride and the contractions.

@Simone_De_Beauvoir Ok, yeah that’s sort of the thing that I have. Mine’s a different brand, but I’m totally trying that out right now… er, as soon as I can hobble upstairs. Thanks so much.

@ubersiren oh good! I hope you get relief – I remember the pain. My dilation phase lasted over 2 weeks.
