I’m not talking about basic sex-romps from beginning to end… I’m thinking of well written, good plot, interesting characters, possibly deep, contemporary, challenging, passionate and engaging books…
I’ve read some Anais Nin, which I found interesting and scintillating but a bit too brooding and dark at times. I’ve also read Jeanette Winterson’s Oranges are not the only fruit which I enjoyed but that was years ago so I couldn’t give you a more detailed response to it other than I moderately enjoyed it.

This could be great blog idea because I like to write fiction at times… I wish I could help, you mean like a day long seduction between a couple? Almost sounds like me and the wife several times a week!
Is graphic sex important, or can a couple of the characters just be lesbians in what is other wise good crime fiction. Where, basically, there is no sex any where.
Other than that, I don’t do romance, even heterosexual romance.
I know some movies – but not any books. If These Walls Could Talk 2 – Such a heartfelt movie. It follows three pairs of lesbians in different time periods. The struggles they went through and obsticles to overcome. The cool part is that it all takes place in the same house! Very good! Check it out! Oh – btw – the original If These Walls Could Talk – has the same basic storyline, but instead of following lesbians and their story, it follows 3 women and their struggles with Abortion. Also good. Both movies have a great cast in them also
Not to be off topic, but this is why we need an “Adult” section of the website :\
@Val123 I wouldn’t necessarily say take the sex out altogether! but you know..I don’t want it to be sex on every page or even 50% of the book…for that matter… but then conversely a well-written novel addressing issues pertaining to lesbians that didn’t include sex… for sure…. I’m interested in getting a well rounded view of “lesbian fiction”
@Arp I understand what you’re saying… but really… I don’t see that there is anything explicit in the question that would necessarily rate this an adult question… lesbianism and lesbian fiction is a relevant subject (I believe) for teenagers – and those not classed as adult, that could be registered on this site…just as it is for adults… but..that is off topic… but it wouldn’t harm to have an “adult section” – it’s just then how it’s decided what goes into that…
Anyway…
@LethalCupcake thank you,... I’ll check those out, they sound fascinating!
Yes @Arp – are they listening?
Ugh. I’ve threatened to begin writing, if for no other reason that I am sure that I can write better lesbian fiction that what’s out there.
The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith
The Children’s Hour (a play) by Lillian Hellman
Sarah Waters has some interesting work. She writes researched period pieces and can get a little heavy on the ideas of “butch” and “femme” (for my taste of course). I would consider her stuff on the “light” side, but it is a step above the slim pickings out there.
@liminal beat me to it. My first thought, Sarah Waters.
I’m not 100% sure what ‘lesbian fiction’ is, but one of my all time favorite books is “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe.”
@Arp I think that’s what the old (NSFW) thing is for.
That movie “Chasing Amy” was real good
If I’m not mistaken, some of the stories in this book by Elizabeth Hand would fit that description. It’s been a while since I read it, but it was the first thing your question brought to mind.
Though it’s not specifically lesbian fiction, Miranda July’s collection of short stories No One Belongs Here More Than You is a fantastic example of various human relationships, interactions and different kinds of longing and loneliness.
hmmm..ive seen some porn thats not genuine…
@Jeruba I was won at “a young lepidopterist” ! thank you x sounds fabulous and intriguing!
@liminal I’d forgotten about Sarah Waters… yes I’ve read Tipping the Velvet and Fingersmith…I liked them
@daemonelson I’ve kept meaning to look that up (NSFW) I always presumed it meant not solely for women??... lol… I now know!!! (after searching on Wiki!). I shall use that in future… and apologies for any offence caused.. although I still don’t think it would apply to this question :-)
@simonPARASITE I just welled up with tears just reading the title of that book… must get it! Thank you!!
thank you for all your suggestions… keep ‘em coming x
@lynneblundell That’s quite alright. It took me a few times seeing it, and seeing the questions associated with it, before realising what it meant.
@simonPARASITE I’ve just finished reading your recommendation.. I loved it.. it really was sheer brilliance… poignant, sassy, original, gloriously witty and moving…thank you so very much !!
I just read a book: Trick by Ellen Hopkins – So great – and fits the category
