The upper peninsula of Michigan. It’s really lovely up there, but it’s very cold in the winter, so plan accordingly.
Theodore Rooseveldt National Park in western North Dakota. South unit has lots of fun family activities. I prefer the north unit—much less traffic/people, beautiful landscapes with buffalo and lots of other wildlife, bike/horse trails, nice campground.
The Cherokee National Forest or the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. They’re just as beautiful as the Smokies but much less crowded. It’s quiet and tucked away.
Rocky Mountain Arsenal. It used to be a chemical weapons manufacturing facilitiy during parts of WWII and the Cold War, but has since been decommisioned, cleaned up, and turned into a very successful wildlife preserve. It’s a great place to take some photos of wildlife, including a local herd of Bison, and several nesting pairs of Bald Eagles.
Purgatory Chasm in Sutton, Massachusetts
Limington, Maine
San Juan Islands, Washington
Lake Chargoggagoggmanchaugagoggcharbunagungamaugg, in Webster, Massachusetts (it’s certainly an unconventional name, anyway)
Well it’s hard to find anything anymore undiscovered but this is certainly less touristy. Montauk on the Eastern End of Long Island, the easternmost part of NY is often known for movie stars from East Hampton to Amagansett but the Theodore Roosevelt County Park is home to the oldest working cattle ranch in the United States-Deepdale Ranch
yessir Texas a Yankee cattle ranch This is where Teddy returned with his Rough Riders after the battle of San Juan Hill. But the area is unlike the topography one would ever mistake for a cattle ranch because the Atlantic Ocean surrounds the peninsula.
The area is gorgeous with rolling hills and eroded cliffs with the pounding surf of the Atlantic and world class fishing. The cattle ranch is clearly seen from Montauk Highway (a two lane road) but the park is mostly passed with very little even aware of its existence. A windswept area of sea dunes and rugged beauty in addition to some hidden wetlands.
P.S.- On the drive East you can visit Teddy’s Home in Oyster Bay at Sagamore Hill
I always take people to the Rainbow River in Citrus County, FL. It’s one of the best-preserved bodies of water in the country, the water is always a glorious 73 degrees, and it’s clear as crystal. Absolutely beautiful.
@aprilsimnel , perfect! Winter sports are wonderful there, and the summer is an unspoiled adventure.
