Is your brain wired to notice small details, or do you go through life not really noticing things unless they make a great impact?

Asked by Val123 (12739points) February 2nd, 2010

I was a HS English teacher last week. I was meandering through the classroom as the kids were working, and came across this book. “The Freud Reader.” I was intriguing, so I picked it up and looked at it more carefully….and started cracking up (silently, of course.) :) Is this IRONIC or what?! Details. My wife is the opposite. The range of ‘normal’ encompasses a spectrum of OCD behavior, with some of us closer to one end than the other.

It depends on what I am doing. Most of the time I notice details.Btw…there’s a piece of spinach on your tooth ;)

Haha it made me laugh out loud. Pretty darn ironic indeed…

I am definitely a detail noticing person; it scares me sometimes how much I remember about other Flutherers, for example. Sometimes, people like my husband think I am weird because of the connections I make between things.

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaha. and ha. I’m all details but I try my hardest to step back and see the “big picture”

My research group has done some work showing significant sex differences in memory for central ideas (the “gist”) vs. details. Anyone want to guess which sex is predisposed to remember which?

@kikibirdjones and @HTDC (I’m wondering if you two are the only ones who looked at the link….?)

Val123's avatar

@nikipedia Wiminz are predisposed to the details, menz to the big picture, right?

SundayKittens's avatar

@Val123 I didn’t see it at first, but I’m glad I finally did. Perrrrfect.

@kikibirdjones You know, you sound like cat women there!

I’m a small details kind of guy.

janbb's avatar

@Val123 I did, but I figured you still wanted a straight answer to the question.

Val123's avatar

@mattbrowne So…what’d you see in my link??

Val123's avatar

@janbb Oh, I do want straight answers! But it’s also kind of interesting, as an aside, that it appears some folks didn’t get the irony in the link I posted…but, I could be wrong. Just because they didn’t comment on it doesn’t mean they didn’t see it or “get” it.

janbb's avatar

@Val123 And Im wondering if you noticed my pun?

Val123's avatar

@janbb LOL!! Touche!!! LOL some more!

Very detail-oriented person here… when necessary however, I can take a step back for a different perspective. It’s taken years of practice though, and a lot of discipline when emotions start to flow.

I tend to notice details, especially in the outside world e.g. cloud formations, light quality, birdsong, the development of flowers, colour and so on and so on. I have noticed most people do not seem to notice such things.

tinyfaery's avatar

Wow. Am I the only female who just goes for the gist? I tend to focus on what is necessary in the moment. (This is actually one of my survival skills.). But that is not to say that I don’t notice the small things around me. I find so much around me amusing. So do you, apparently.

mattbrowne's avatar

I’m still searching for the irony…

Val123's avatar

@mattbrowne FINALLY! I get to tell YOU something you don’t know! YAY!

The link above. “The Freud Reader.” Edited by Peter Gay. PETER GAY!! Just the “Gay” part is hilarious, but his first name is PETER! Peter Gay editing Freud! :)

@Adagio I’m with you. I was taking my kids to school once when I saw some Morning Glories trailing through a wooden fence. They were so lovely! I pointed them out to the kids and my daughter said, “Mom. You always see the smallest, neatest things….” :)

downtide's avatar

I don’t notice details at all. Heck I don’t even notice the blindingly obvious most of the time. But then I have a visual disability so I miss a lot of things simply because I’m not physically able to see them at all.

mattbrowne's avatar

Oh, there are so many things I don’t know. I actually get the feeling the more I learn the more stuff is actually out there somewhere and one life won’t be enough trying to understand all this. Thanks for the SOLUTION !!
