How can I become a cosmetologist without full-time to dedicate to cosmetology school?

Asked by freckles (363points) February 2nd, 2010

I want to be a cosmetologist some day. Sooner rather than later. For now I am a sophomore in college, not studying for hair at all, doing liberal arts actually. It’s not like I want to quit doing that. I want to have cosmetology on the side.

Then I can open a salon that has Plato and Descarte on the shelves. But seriously I am wondering from people who know how hair school works, how long does it take, can you take it while you have a full time job, Kind of on the side? Any suggestions?

You must be licensed by the state. If you can pass the licensing test, proving that you know and understand all of the things taught in a course on cosmetology, then I suppose you would be fine! But having watched my mom take the course, and all of the scientific and technical information required, I think you would be money and time ahead to take the classes and learn it quickly and correctly. It isn’t easy.

Yeah, I don’t want to teach myself, I just don’t know how I should fit all the classes in. Hmmm….

I’m pretty sure it was Vidal Sassoon that offers a rigerous course on cutting hair that only takes 5 days…so research to see if there are locations in your area! And good luck :D
