Valentines Day gift for my conservative, quiet, academic boyfriend?

Asked by nickip (4points) February 3rd, 2010

My boyfriend is a nerdy-acadmeic type. He’s pretty conservative, and I’m pretty liberal… So he usually expects me to bring some fun and excitement to the relationship. But what do I get someone like him for Valentine’s Day? He doesn’t like gimmicks or for me to spend a lot of time and money on him, but I know he will expect a creative gesture of some sort… Normally, I get him books. But I would really like to do something fun and surprising this year. Any ideas?

Book a couple’s massage (yes, it’s my go-to answer for all things V-day)

You could make him a book- maybe a scrapbook of your relationship

Are you sexually active? Bring some toys/lotions/props into the mix. It’s creative. :)

Take him on a hot air balloon ride.

All of @Likeradar s answers are nice. Maybe a high-quality signature pen (Waterman, Rotring, Mont Blanc, etc)? Welcome to Fluther!

Maybe a book related item. A book light, or one of those devices that hold open a textbook, or an electronic translator/dictionary pen

What about taking him away for a romantic weekend at a bed and breakfast?

Are there any interesting lectures talks, or book readings at a nearby university? That would be a great, nerdy, experiential gift.

Also, check out ThinkGeek for some cute and nerdy things.

How about a blank book where you fill out the first page with a proposed picnic at the end of a scenic walk/light hike that day? Maybe you live near a beach or lake and can go there. Print out some pics from your outing and put them into the book. From there he might start using it as a journal of your outings together and also to jot down ideas for the two of you to look into. Write a dated dedication to him on the inside cover.

I have a book holder I purchased in Pakistan about 25 years ago. Beautifully carved and inlaid (I think it was originally intended to hold a Quran). You may be able to buy something similar at a place like Pier 1 imports. I use mine to hold my Websters Unabridged Dictionary, a massive tome. He might be delighted with such. Also Levengers stocks a great many reading-related supplies and beautifully made leather goods (notebooks, passport holders, briefcases, etc).

How about a card. Guys don’t really expect “creative gestures” on V day. We would not even remember it if Hallmark and half the human race were not making such a big deal of it. Don’t sweat it. However, if you are really up for creative gestures for a guy and you are liberal and he is conservative, get some Godiva dark chocolate covered strawberries. A couple of them will do, the big berries. Then you can eat them together, or if you are terribly creative, you might think of other uses too. It’s been done…:)
