He must be referring to a model of bike used by Police Officers that partrol on bike… You may be looking at a discount, or very strange comment by a bike salesman that needs a commission…
That you’re getting a really good deal? That would be my initial assessment, but I don’t know, cryptic statements like that make me nervous. Maybe he’s stolen the damn thing. That would freak me out and I’d wonder where I had not before. Used car salesmen say things like that. “Such a good deal, it’s a steal!
“license to steal” is an idiom for getting a good deal. It sounds like he thinks he’s giving you a ridiculously good price on the bike.
@Trillian the bike is legit, it was his son’s but he has since upgraded to a newer/nicer model.
@PandoraBoxx that makes sense, I am somewhat “stealing it from him” Original cost was 1500, he posted it for 500, but after a week he has come down to 200 :) (I’m sure the reason he can’t sell is he is in a rural residential area where cycling isn’t that prominent)
Would it help if he had written “be sure to bring your license-to-steal badge”? That would be a nice case of punctuation’s doing its job to support meaning.
Punctuation saves the day yet again!
Oh god do I love hyphens.
