people are ignorant. Period.

Who assumes these things? Not many people, I suspect, assume every Muslim is a terrorist.

Researching Islam seems to reveal that most Muslims, if they actually followed the Quran to the letter, WOULD kill pretty much every person they met on the street. So would Christians, if they properly followed the Bible.

Well my friend, I believe that is the definition of ignorant.

jrpowell's avatar

I don’t know if I would place all of the blame on someone practicing Islam. I think the color of someones skin might be the real reason for fear.

Dorkman, you are referring to a very small, specific extreme sect of Muslims and Christians. The Muslim faith is, in my opinion, actually more peaceful than Christianity but you’d never get that impression from American TV.

I think, in reference to the original question, that it isn’t just uneducated people that think this way, but all that do are clearly ignorant.

I think not just because the media feeds this negativity and then people talk about Islam liketheor fucking scholars but also because no one takes the actual time to read the Quran or sayings of the prophet.yes there are extremists in every religion, not just Islam, how about the crusades,or the problem with England and Ireland? Its history repeating itself, remember how the japanese were treated during WW2?

A 2005 poll in the UK indicated that 16 percent of British Muslims condone suicide bombings in Israel, and 7 percent condoned suicide bombings in Britain.

fuck statistics we all know they don’t get to everyone

A Sunday Times survey found that 40 percent of Muslims in Britain condoned the 9/11 attacks. A radio station in London conducted a poll that showed 48 percent of London’s Muslims (under age 45) willing to fight for Bin Laden, and 98 percent unwilling to fight for Britain.

Both of them are equally barbaric, morally repulsive religions. At least, scripturally.

The thing is, most people RECOGNIZE the dissonance between how God/Allah supposedly says we should behave and how we should treat those who break the laws, and what human morality tells us about how we should behave and treat others.

(Actually, I take that back. Most Christians have NO IDEA what the Bible actually says because they’ve never actually read it, only the parts that their minister preached to them about. I don’t know enough Muslims to confirm the same.)

Although the people who take the faiths literally are usually considered “extremists”, and their groups are small, they are actually the ones following their religion most closely to the letter. They’re the ones who REALLY BELIEVE in the literal truth of EVERY WORD of the Quran, and they are following its teachings to the LETTER.

Again, I don’t mean to direct this specifically at Islam (the Bible is filled with a lot of the same crap, and the extremists do a lot of the same awful things), although they are a few centuries behind in retrofitting their religion to the decent human behavior of the 21st century.

Please understand that I do NOT mean to imply that I believe Muslims are bad people inherently; quite to the contrary, I know that many are decent, compassionate members of society. But they are so in spite of their religion, and not thanks to it.

Rather off the topic, but “doing the research” on Islam would really be unlikely to make people consider it a non-violent religion.

im not taking my chances with any of them. im sure most muslims are good people but why risk it when 15% or more think its a calling from god to kill non muslims

Maverick's avatar

15%!?! Are you insane?!? Do you have any idea how many Muslims there are in the world? The percentage of radicals on the Islam faith is no greater than the percentage of radicals in the Christian faith, or in the human race in general, and is probably no greater than 1%. Don’t forget there are good Christian terrorists like John Jordi out there too, but the media oddly doesn’t tend to mention their faith very much.

thats true mavrick, all of a sudden now we see terrorist training camps in the middle east, and since we need communism allies like china to bring in the wall mart goods we don’t call their military training video of a million soldiers terrorist training camps.also we don’t call north Korea terrorists by releasing that video of them on the news and their nukes, instead the US goes to Iraq after UN officials say we don’t have any proof that there is any weapons, then people say Russia took it back hidden in trucks.its sad what the media is fed from our government.REVOLuTION!

Studying Islam is the best thing I’ve done at school. It has really opened my eyes, the amazing thing being that the word “Islam” actually means peace. I think that everyone who has answered here should take some time out to find out about Islam before believing the statistics or jumping to conclusions, because I am not oging to explain the complexities of Islam here for you. I am writing a 2000 word essay on it at the moment maybe i’ll publish it on the net after and give you guys the link. One thing though, @Dorkman, Muslims read and study the Qur’an for themselves, they have no ministers or chaplains or popes, only an ‘imam’ to read out specific verses at the mosque who is no more significant than anyone else and they swap around often. Every religion has extremsits and fundamentalists it’s just that what’s going on at the moment in the middle east has fuelled the media to portray everything at its worst. To sort out the problems the West needs to try to understand Islam, and Islam needs to let them, and try to understand the West. George W. Bush is really not helping this by talking about a Good vs. Evil war. He is what you’d called ignorant.

Even after 9/11, I never thought that all muslims were evil. When people don’t take the time to educated themselves, this is the end result, plain and simple, FEAR! Fear that someone is out to get them.

Firstly, the 9/11 extremists were highly educated and so is Osama Bin Laden and his henchmen. Secondly, a large percentage of muslims condoned the attacks, especially those who could ‘admire’ the attacks from a distance without suffering reprisals from westerners. So education has nothing to do with it really. Those muslims who adopt a fully western life and integrate well with westerners are less likely to suffer discrimination.
