Anyone know anything about training dogs?

Asked by BoBo1946 (15325points) February 4th, 2010

Often wondered how people can train dogs to do unbelievable tricks. Was researching the web this morning on dog training and came across this video that really stirred my curiosity on how people train dogs.

Please watch this video and give me your ideas on how this dog can be trained to do the mambo! This is one of the most amazing videos I’ve ever seen!

This is a very cool video and shows some very intense training. Some dogs are more easily trained than others, I believe. Labs are great for training because of the way they were bred, but pretty much all dogs are smart enough to be trained to some degree.

I’ve never been able to train any of my dogs to do tricks like this (I’ve never really attempted it), but all training starts small. The guy in the video probably began with teaching the dog to stand up on its hind legs, then walk on two legs, and then the steadily more complex moves. Training takes lots of repetition and patience. There are trainers who can help you do this, to a degree. But it also depends a lot on the relationship you have with your dog; you have to be loving but consistently strict so that they obey your command, always. That’s the way all dogs should be treated, in my opinion.

@slick44 my Spunky passed away August 22, 2009 at 2:58am in my arms. Miss her SO bad…she was a stray! Will change my avatar and you can see her! She was a sweetie in every sense of word. Never did anything wrong. Always the lady. And, so smart.

How about you? Do you have a dog or other animals?

I feel the need to be the voice of reason here; instead of training your dog to do stupid and humiliating tricks, why not work on something meaningful? Visiting children with cancer, visiting the elderly, becoming an avalanche rescue dog, learning how to sniff out impending epilectic seizures, or cancerous cells. Or just bringing in the newspaper and perhaps mowing the lawn.

@gailcalled How would know that I’m not doing all those things? But, thought we were discussing training dogs here. Did you take time to watch the video? It might make your day a little better.

I did, indeed, watch the video, and it didn’t change the quality of my day. Funny but silly.
I have seen what dogs can give to a needy and suffering portion of the community.

Dog in the video is awesome. It looks like a series of four or five smaller tricks to me, and the dog is taking cues from the trainer. I guess that is how human dancers do it too.
@gailcalled Humiliation is in the eye of the beholder. That dog and his owner probably take great satisfaction and even joy from learning to dance. You wouldn’t think it was humiliating for a person to learn to dance, would you? We would all be safer and healthier if everyone, people and dogs, dedicated themselves to medical service and rescue. But it would be a boring life if no one danced.

@stump well said! wish i could have thought of that! loll

@All; You’re right. The dog is cute and charming; imagine him and his trainer doing that in a children’s cancer ward as well.

What a hysterical video. The dog dancing with a smile, the man dancing with a smile and the guy on the couch watching them laughing so hard he was crying. What in the world could be wrong with that??

As for the training of an animal to do this, it’s just like any other “trick” you teach them. You figure out a way to show them what you want them to do, either by provoking the action or catching and rewarding them when they stumble onto it by themselves. Then you practice and reinforce it until they will do it on command.

I have a dog that will fall over dead when I point my finger-gun at her and say “bang”. This “trick” came from her tendency to flop down and roll over to get her belly rub whenever I spoke to her.

I have another dog that will smile, grin on command and this came about as a result of her being naughty and doing the grin of her own volition, me liking it, and encouraging her in her “trick”. Now she does it whenever asked and whenever she has been naughty. I call it her ‘get out of jail free card” because I just can’t stay mad at a dog grinning and tossing her head in an “aw shucks” manner.

@BoBo1946 – I lost my old girl last December and she was the dog love of my life. She also was a lady in every sense of the word and lived her life as an example of loving patience and kindness.

I’m sorry for your loss and I know, like mine is for me, it is as fresh today as it was the day you lost her.

BoBo1946's avatar

@Merriment certainly understand my friend. Lost Spunky on August 22, 2009 as she died in my arms. She was the love of my life…like your baby, she was a lady in every sense of the word also. A stray that I had for 11 years. Miss her so much…will change my avatar and you can see her.
