Where can you always sleep, when it is cold and you don't have any money?

Hypothetical:
You move to a city where you know no one.
It is one of the 20 largest cities in the US.
You have no money, but you find a job. You have a car. Where would you sleep if it was the dead of winter? Cars get cold when it is negative degree weather!
Where do you sleep while you get enough money for an apartment?

Shelter or knock on the door of a church.
@JeanPaulSartre – That use to work.
With cameras everywhere you would get kicked out in a half an hour at the most.
This was spawned at a conversation at work today, I said I would be able to rough it again, then someone through this scenario at me… and I have never been this bad. I have always managed to have a roof. Thank god.
Well, that’s why other people have apartments, and they leave their windows unlocked…
I walk all night. I might meet someone. Who knows what might happen?
Homeless shelter. That’s what they exist for. Otherwise you don’t move to a city where you don’t know anyone in the winter in the north. A decent sleeping bag inside a car is plenty warm for sleeping in a lot of the U.S.
@ChazMaz Not on the NY subways – but probably many places, yeah.
@Snarp – Yeah, I’ve slept in a car – only one night – but I was warm enough with enough blankets. Not great for stretching out – but it was fine.
You might not sleep, and you should be prepared for that. Go to an all-night diner (the largest cities certainly have them) and buy a cup of coffee. Nurse the hell out of that thing! If you grab a newspaper from somewhere and take a table out of the way, then you might be able to prop up the paper and sleep behind that.
But I would plan to sleep during the day at the bus station instead.
A 24-hour laundromat would probably be warm and you could easily pretend you’re waiting for clothes.
I’ve taken some naps in 24 hour laundromats, set something to dry for a bit and I napped. I napped too long once from like 2AM to 7AM and cops came in and told me to vacate my homeless ass.
barter your time and effort for some warm corner at a bar or convenience store
I would probably look for houses that are foreclosed on and find one that is easy to break into. I would sleep there and just make sure to get out by 7am.
There’s actually a whole series of questions similar to this that were asked by a user named ‘starbux’ last fall. The user is gone now, but the questions remain, and you can find them by searching on that username. They elicited a lot of interesting information that I saved as good research in case I need it for fictional purposes.
@johnpowell OP did state large city, so likelihood of foreclosed house being broken into without being noticed is highly unlikely . . . although it may put your sorry @$$ at a warm cell down at the precint.
I saw a movie with WIl SMith…based on a true story. They slept in a public restroom.
As for my self, maybe in my car in a busy parking garage.
@MoBEE . . . the premise of this post is that it’s too cold to be sleeping in your car, so what’s your alternative plan?
you watch and wait at the door of a large apartment building. when someone comes out,you go in, down to the basement where the washing machines are, and bike racks, and sleep in a corner (hidden)
I’ve always said that if I was running out of money and likely to be homeless soon, I would spend my last cash on a bus ticket to Key West. Then I would sleep where ever.
@Snarp I did that but went to Riverside California instead.
