Why do iphones cost more on ebay than they do at the apple store?

Asked by Kingkamandi (149points) February 4th, 2010

Even locked ones sell for a couple hundred dollars more than they go for at the apple store, or online. What gives? I understand phones which have been jail broken selling for more than sticker, but this seems ridiculous!

Because when you get them from the Apple Store, a 2-year AT&T contract is required. You can’t buy them through the apple store without having a contract. On ebay, you are buying them outright, without those strings attached.

People might not have credit cards or might have money that they got on eBay from selling stuff.

Either they are selling them outright with no contract or they are Jailbroken. That means that the firmware has been modified in such a way to allow a high level of customization. This pushes the price up because there are a high demand for jailbroken and unlocked models to use on other carriers besides AT&T

However, jailbreaking an iPhone is completely free and can be done rather simply. It is not illegal if analyzed properly, but if you jailbreak one while the phone is under warranty, that warranty will expire. Also, you will still be paying for that contract you signed with AT&T if you get one through their stores or through Apple’s. Of course, if there is an option to cancel the contract, which will include a hefty cancellation fee, you can do that as well.
