Do you keep your design magazines?

Asked by metadog (381points) February 6th, 2010

Hi! I have been an art director and graphic designer for almost 20 years. In that time I have accumulated a ton (literally) of design magazines (Archive, How, Print, Communication Arts, etc.). At this point, they take up too much space, but I hate to get rid of them. I am torn. How do you handle this?

My husband has every Automobile magazine (literally the magazine is called Automobile, not that he has a variety of auto magazines, it is a monthly magazine) as far back as 1986.

I keep architectural digest, and some other related magazines when I buy them, but I don’t have many, maybe 8).

I’ve kept all my magazine collections. I think it’s great having a lot of magazines, especially the older ones, because they have great references. If you want to narrow it down, just skim through them and toss the ones you find least interesting.

I’m not an art anything, but I do appreciate certain advertisements, photographs, and articles published in magazines. What I started to do when I began to accumulate publications is keep only the stuff I wanted and toss the rest. I just tore out the pages I liked and stuck them in plastic sleeves in a binder by categories. You might also scan them and go digital.

Go through them all, find the ones that give you the most information on the time period and/or design tips that are still valid. Keep those and recycle the rest.
